W124 Sunroof Seal too Big?

Hey Guys,

I'm working on replacing the sunroof seal on my W124. The original is pretty hard and has a lot of paint on it from previous paint jobs. I've got a new MB one 124 780 00 98 for my 91 300D.

I'm having a hell of a time getting it all to fit. Its almost like the long portions are 1-3 inches too long.

Has anyone run into this before? Maybe I'm missing something?

Yeah. Had the same issue on my W123. I just trimmed to fit. Your results may vary.

My seal is one big loop. The W123's looks to be individual pieces.

I could break open the loop and trim it a bit hmm.

I went through this with the SDL. It seemed like the entire seal was something like 6" too long!

What I wound up doing was pressing the corner pieces in place, leaving an even "loop" of extra material on each side. I then divided up the "loop" evenly along each side, then pressed it all in place. Close the sunroof and leave it for a day or two and it should be ok.

Until the new seal compresses, the sunroof may drag on it a little bit and need some "help" to fully close. It took mine about 2 weeks in the sun before it worked properly, but been fine since. YMMV...

Here's where I'm at right now. I put the corners in but the only excess appears to be in the back..

The profile of the seal changes at the corners so I can't really offset it. The sheet metal area isn't enough to accommodate the bigger corner profile.
