From what I gather, they do in fact have the sickness. We all know there is no cure.

I never said to get a 1980's car, I said mid 2000, there is a world of difference between the two eras. Yes, they occasionally break but are generally cheap to fix and any shop can work on them. Try that in podunk USA with a 30 year old MB. I'm not a brand snob, I'll drive anything that runs. My vehicle purchases are based on type of need , parts availability , purchase price and finally what wanders across my path. As for bringing " the kids up right " , that sounds like kids should be raised not to be able to make their own choices and blindly follow what the previous generation did. Who says what the previous generation was right in the first place? At some point someone said " I'm tired of living in a damp cave, I'm going to build my own from trees, that way it will be dry " |

Before getting the kids into a nice Benz like a w201 or w210 I believe having them buy a cheap $500 car like a Honda civic or Toyota may be the best option. It'd be a shame to see them smash fenders, headlights, curb wheels or rear end someone in something as nice as a Benz. Then when they actually learn how to drive you can buy them a nice car like a Benz. New drivers are scary.

Sorry my daughters aren’t rolling a $500 Honda, nope no way no how LOL.
The 240D has survived a year and a half of daughter number one without a scratch, and if it does not survive it was still cheaper than a 100,000 mile Honda. A W123 is considered a super cool classic where we live, I think the right 190D will work just fine. I’m not worried about parts, I have a great old school mechanic that has mountains of parts for the old MBZ’s. I infected the kids with classic and old school cars from day one, it’s my own fault.

Time for me to speak up. I’ve had three 2.2 diesels. Here they rust out way before they wear out. Two have needed head gaskets, which I did myself. One had 165k and one had only 90k mile on the clock. Only one of the three had a working egr, not an issue here.
Cruising speed on the highway. These are small engines and get shrill over 65mph. I have cruised for hours at seventy in mountainous terrain, but you won’t be listening to the tunes. I like these cars for the fuel economy. The state of the engine has a lot to do with the numbers, but even a worn out smoky example will pull mid thirty, and my current car, with 102k gets forty some days with an automatic. Freeway driving will pull that number down noticeably. If you’re not 6’6” and not a big person, these are comfortable as can be. My neighbor can just drop himself in, but getting out is hard for him. He’s a big boy however. The back seat is for children and dogs only. But the trunk was obviously designed to carry two golf bags and a litter of kittens. We stuff my 190 every year on our trip to Maine (why we have to take pots and pans I’ll never understand), put a bicycle on the rear for maximum drag, throw two grownups and the beagle in the back, and take off. The mileage suffers a bit, but it’s all under 55mph, and we prefer that to taking the new Honda. They feel safe, not dangerously overpowered, good stopping, and on surface streets are more than able to compensate for a novice driver. I’ve never had any of mine up to 80, but be forewarned, that would be a very loud journey. |

I own a 2.2 5 speed, but havent driven it yet.
I LOVE my 2.5 5 speed, and the 87 2.5 turbo automatic is simply a blast to drive. Biggest issue I had was the aux pump and coolant tank... expensive and hard to find... figure 800 just for parts... The m pump has dv seal leakage issues... fairly cheap to fix.

Just a heads up, you won't find an 87 190D Turbo with a manual unless it's been swapped and you probably won't find a 190D Turbo or a manual anyway because of the rarity. 190Ds were rare in the first place but there were less than 1500 190D turbos imported to the US and most 190Ds imported were automatics.
My first car was a 190D 2.5 auto, has enough power for most things but no ABS. I subsequently went to a 190E Sportline when I had the chance, which I'm now converting to manual and megasquirt. I'd personally recommend a late W210 for a combination of safety, reliability, and cheap parts.

Once you find one, go through the cooling system, completely. Make sure it is tight. I completely miss my first one... drove it with a leaking coolant, forgot to check it one morning and DESTROYED the motor.

I live in used car Mecca.
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/d/rare-1987-mercedes-190e-190dt/6376092331.html To many miles for me though. Then there is this one, http://atcm.co/S2PVDP/183383ae But I can’t stop laughing at the price.
