Opinions on buying this 74 240d
I’m looking at a 74 240d on CL, I haven’t seen it in person since it’s a several hour drive away. I’d like some of you guys opinions on price and value for it. I’ve always liked the style of these old w115s. I currently own an 84 300d. Thanks for any advice in advance.

IMO it’s priced high for a non-enthusiast car. The seller is enthusiastic about something but not the engineering that went into the original car. It could be a good place to start that it’s clean and likely to be rust free. Suspensions typically tire from being lowered like that. Hopefully the primary maintenance provider wasn’t Jiffy Lube. It’s a particularly clean and shiny example and might be the only one you’ll see for sale for a while but I think it’s more a $2000 running project. $5000 should get you a well preserved and sorted W115 whether it has 200K or 300K on the clock.
Any 240D is a lifestyle change even from an ‘84 300D. Make sure your driving style can adapt if it’s a commuter. I’d check this carefully for rust but it seems a better value - https://fortsmith.craigslist.org/cto/d/1975-mercedes-benz-300d/6385207807.html Sixto 98 E320s sedan and wagon |

Slammed on stock springs and the interior hacked up for a bunch of aftermarket speaker crap screams that a bunch of other stuff has been half-assed on the car over the years. Already too expensive, and you'll likely have to put more money in it to fix other hidden or "bodged" problems. I saw way too many cars like that when I was seeking out my diesel, it's part of the reason I settled on an unmolested car that sat in a field in rough shape instead.

Dan-
I would recommend against the car in the original post. I believe I see rust on the trunk lid. If it is rusting there. It is rusting all sorts of other places. A rusty W115 is not worth $5K. If it does have rust anywhere of significance, it is a $1000 to $1500 car. In W115s, rust appears commonly under the feet of the front passengers, under the plastic trunk mat, and in the body panel behind the rear wheels (sorry I don't know its official name).

The slammed suspension would be more than enough to make me look elsewhere.

They’ve been advertising that car in Austin, too. The Austin ad makes it sound like the car is in the Dallas area. I wonder where the vehicle is actually located?

All things considered, too much for the car. Remember, if the interior is original, the seat support will be flat. The difference between new and old seats is amazing, as you will see. All other things considered, it's just too much. Max 3000 if you got a lot of extra parts and an extensive maintenance record.

The underside of that car has scraped more than one speed bump, I'll wager.

I see small dings and what looks like rust, those things are rust buckets to begin with. Rust = don't buy it at any price. If the rust is just on the deck lid that's no big deal.
If all that work was done in a professional manner and IF it's rust free and you like the lowered stance then go look. If some jackass butchered the job then it's worthless IMO. The seats look to have been recovered and look like katzkin, that's a plus. I'm not into "bagged" cars and think a lowered 240D is as ridiculous as one gets but I can respect it if it's your thing. I have to admit my daily driver is lowered. A clean '74 240D in So Cal could easily bring $4,000- $5,000.

I would be concerned about the rebuilt motor. Make sure it was a reputable shop. These engines are generally bullet-proof, but that doesn't apply when some idiot was working on it.
The motor in that stereo will fail quickly. I think $5000 is rather high for that car. As others have mentioned, the paint is not original and looks too good to be true. Doing a proper paint job on one of these cars will cost at least $5000. It is possible someone could get a good looking paint job for $500 from Earl Scheib or the like, but the difference is it simply won't last. When I repainted my W123, any tiny contact with the surface would cause the paint to chip. The OEM paint takes very serious sanding to scratch it. There are a bunch of Mercedes that just look disgusting because someone decided to ditch the original paint job. The old paint jobs have a way of looking elegant even with old and cracked paint in places. Dkr. |

I think it looks great, the seat color is awesome and reminds me of punk and gothic times. The silver stuff is probably dynamat or similar soundproofing. If the look isn't your style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Over my head price wise though.
