Today was the first day I could get a good look at the A/C in the new 240d. When I picked it up on Wed the belt was off and the clutch had what seemed like way to much play. Today I noticed the compressor was not factory but was put in in 98 and had "Ester" on the plate. It also had one 134 fitting on the high side that was the wrong one, and the old style screw fitting on the low side. Got me to thinking so I continued to look and noticed all the hoses were the new type for 134. So I went out and bought a new belt got it all together and fired it up. Nothing. So I pulled the pressure switch wires off to jump and still got nothing. Figured the clutch was history but tried feeding it 12v right from the battery and it kicked in. Checked the pressures and they were way low but it did have some gas. Looked at the pressure switch wires and noticed one was cut, not broken, someone had clipped it and then wraped black tape around it. Fixed this, put the correct 134 fittings on the low side, added 1.5 cans of r134 and it was back to normal on both the high and low side and blowing cold air! Yes! I don't know why this thing had been disabled and then it looks like someone hid the fact by cutting one wire. The clutch does make noise when not engaged and may need to be replaced sometime soon but when it's engaged it makes no noise at all. The PO said he tried to have it charged before and the A/C place said it would not accept a charge. If they were trying to use the one charge fitting on the high side it's no wonder it would not take a charge.
