om617 n/a vs om617 turbo
I have a 1974 w115 240D, speed manual, that I bought already swapped with a N/A om617. I also have an om617.950 (so turbo but non egr) sitting in my garage, that i want to put in for more power. I am aware of the turbo clearance issue which I can resolve with some frabrication and the oil filter housing issue which is also resolvable. Am I correct in thinking that it should be a direct fit as far as transmission and motor mounts go? Any other issues that could pop up?

You'll need to swap the motor mount arms as they are different. There is a possibility you'll need to swap the intermediate plate, which bolts the transmission bellhousing. But I think they'll be the same.
It should be a direct swap once you correct the turbo to body clearance, relocate the oil filter housing and possibly fabricate new throttle linkages (your current setup should work). . .

The PO had turned his NA OM617 into a turbo with a bolt-on kit and then reverted back to NA by gutting the turbine housiing and installing a cast iron blocking plate with a huge V-band. If you were to use it (with either of your motors), your downpipe would need still to be modifiied, but the turbo would tuck in neatly in the W115 engine bay. Here is a post with photos. Early OM617 T4 adapter I have removed the gutted turbine housing and returned it (and the downpipe with downpipe-to-turbo flange) for a store credit at PNP. Send me a PM if you are interested.

If your 115 is up and running with a 617 na I'd personally just run it. I'd find a non runner with a good body to put your turbo in. The 115 NA is a fine driving machine especially if it is a stick. Remote locating filters and cutting sheet metal for turbo clearance is nothing to sneeze at. There also will be issues with the power steering and or the AC pumps too.

I agree with Tom..... Not having that turbo in that engine compartment really helps in a lot of ways...

When they designed the 115 AC was not such a requirement and they sort of jury rigged it. The front of the engine compartment is very narrow. Putting in the later motor even if not the turbo version would be difficult. With a turbo even if you are a very skilled welder it just doesn't seem worth it to me.
If you have the later motor from a 123 better to buy one to put it in. Its not as if putting in the turbo motor will make it an amg.

Found another photo of the T4 adapter in the W115 engine bay before it was pulled, showing how you can shoehorn in a turbo without sheetmetal work.

That doesn't look like a functioning turbo.

The trans will definitely fit and work fine. That's what I run in Mutt the Race Truck. The OM617 intermediate plate works with the OM616 bellhousing and clutch assembly. If you need more clutch holding power you can look at my build thread for a source for a "sticker" disc.
There's an "issue" with the pilot bearing but the previous installer must have resolved that already. The OM617 turbo will DEFINITELY give you a kick in the seat of the pants as well as a platform to build more HP if you decide to do that. As mentioned, there will no doubt be challenges to getting it all to fit but to me that's the fun of it! Dan |

Correct, it is an empty turbine housing...that has been returned for store credit at the PNP.
The picture was taken at the Sacramento PNP prior to removing the assembly. "The PO had turned his NA OM617 into a turbo with a bolt-on kit and then reverted back to NA by gutting the turbine housiing and installing a cast iron blocking plate with a huge V-band."
