My '84 greymarket 300TD uses calipers with steel pucks, the last 'rebuilder' used phenolic pucks and not surprisingly they failed after a year or so .

Going down hill towards a steel safety barrier, in the rain no less .

Our host here, jerked me off for over three months before sending me crappy no brand Chinese made calipers, I've kept my originals and will rebuild them when I find a source for the correct steel pucks .

I've seen lots and lots of good wagon calipers in junkyards but didn't realize they're different and so never grabbed any .
I have never seen anything but steel pistons ("pucks") in all the ATE or Bendix calipers I have seen or worked on. I have not done anything yet with the brakes on my wagon. Maybe Thursday I will get a chance.

That's my point ~ some idiot used phenolic ones, I have no idea if that's why they failed but I'm not happy to say the least ~ what if SWMBO had been driving ? .

Photos

Here are photos of the car before getting the paint polished. A friend is coming over today to work his magic on the paint. I have seen some before and after photos of cars he has done, and it is amazing. After that, the interior will get some attention. I am also planning to put my restored 15" Bundts on (sorry greazzer)......Rich

What you don't see is the paint is oxidized badly. I washed it, and that alone made my wash mitt turn ivory colored. I removed all the belt molding, so it will be easier to polish the panels. I will probably be replacing it with new pieces anyway. The license plates will get restored as well. After photos in a couple days......Rich

Understood Rich ;

I have decades of experience polishing and waxing chalky German paints, this is single stage and should come back really well .

Moving right along.......

I got the car up on stands, and the wheels and brakes removed. I disassembled all four calipers, cleaned, wire wheeled and painted them. My friend only got the polishing done on the upper part of the car (above the belt molding). It is hard to tell from the photos, but it is nice and smooth and shiny. I also got the four rotors turned today. After I got them back, I realized that I should have wire wheeled and painted them before turning. Oh well, I can remove any paint before installing them. I should have the brakes all back together by the weekend......Rich

You really should paint the calipers red or orange!

How did you get that "belt molding" off? Have always wondered how it is attached. Suspect my '81 300SD has them attached the same way.

It pops off. One screw on the end of some of them. Proceed with care.

? Did you measure the discs after having them ground ? .

I recently replaced the original 367,000 + mile front rotors on my '82 240D, they were amazingly worn, maybe 8MM left at best, the min. spec . is 9MM . brandy new ATE ones were cheap, I hated fooling with the bolts holding them to the hubs, I used red locktite on the threads .

I then found a set of brandy new front rotors on a junked '77 240-D and bought them, all I have to do is service the bearings and install them to my 427,000 + mile '84 300CD .

Soon I hope as the rotors are looking mighty thin .

Minimum thickness for the front is 10.6mm, rear 8.3mm. All four are thicker than that. It is getting new pads on front, and the rears that were on there are thicker than the new ones I have.

Yes they pop off using a plastic pry tool (from the bottom) on a W123. Not sure about a W126. The rear quarter molding has a small screw (7mm tool) in the trunk (sedan/coupe) or in the left and right compartment in the wagon. The trunk lid/tailgate molding has about six screws holding it on (same 7mm tool). All but two pieces (trunk/tailgate, and one side quarter molding) are available new from our sponsor.
