Looks #6 is cracked. Looks like a failed head gasket at #1.

If it wasn't for 6 i may would had it hydro tested. I dont think welding 6 would be a lasting solution?

Noticed that crack as well. That's exactly why that thing was in the junkyard. Motor probably made terrible power on the road with the compression numbers and overheated on top of it.

When I pulled the #14 head on my '87 wagon, there were huge cracks between all the valves and pre-chambers, every cylinder. The head had finally cracked to the point that it was mixing coolant into the oil (lab analysis detected the problem, there were no signs that I could detect by my five senses (well four maybe - I didn't taste any of the fluids). My point is that just one crack may not have caused the problem. I think that failed headgasket at the front oil gallery is a real problem.

I'm always curious if my #14 has any cracks, and if so how many...it has 154k miles, runs really well, but I still wonder...

I can explain 1 and 2 low compression due to oil migration between the head gasket, 3 and 4 compression were ok, 5 has small evidence of coolant leak one head bolt was rusty in addition to some discoloration under ring seal. 6 does not have any other evidence just wondering what was breached by the crack water, oil ? Too bad I couldn't just cut off no. 6 and make it into a 602 head. Outside of the crack the head looks great one of the nicer ones I have seen.

AFAIK the cracks start inside and propagate to the combustion chamber surface. There can be cracks that you can’t see.

Well a forum member sold me a number 18 head very reasonable although pitted somewhat its currently at a machine shop getting new exhaust guides and resurfaced.

Now that its starting to slowly warm up and hopefully this will be the last week of negative temperatures I want to remove the timing case cover and oil pan and noted all the fastners how they integrate into the head and pan. If anyone would have first hand experience on how reassembly should be stagged that would sure put my mind at ease. Trying to get a leak free engine.
