Replace 602 with 603 in 92 124

PNP 50% off i found a 1987 e300td only thing taken was alternator. Im having some head problems again 80k since last head gasket replacement other one lasted 95 k.km A rework of the head would run $1k includes filling in where electrolisis ate some rather large holes redeck it new guides and regrind seats and valves etc.

I am thinking of grabbing the 603 engine with all acessories except alternator. Take the transmission cross member and drive shaft to the diff. All in $500. Would i need the drive line? Any thing else needed to put it in my 124?

The car looks good 7 outta 10 no rust several injectors on top are wet and an inline electricfuel pump was installed. 286 k km not really sure why its in the yard. Think its worth the effort?

That is sickening. I know around here and I am sure everywhere the PNP seems to buy cars at dealer auctions. So perfectly good cars get traded in and sent to auction, where used car lots bid on them to sell on their lots as well as salvage yards. I was at the PNP a while back and discovered a car there that I used to own. It was a 96 E300 that I sold to a friend of mine. He had it for a while then sold it to a coworker of his. Later on he asked me if I wanted to buy it off her and I thought about it but never did anything. I then saw it at the pnp. I knew it was a perfectly good car and noticed it had a dealer stock tag in the window. Yep, she traded it in and the pnp bought it at the auction. Very sad. I thought about going back and getting the engine but have never pulled an engine out in a yard like that and never got around to messing with it.

Another way to look at it, is these vehicles are now "organ donors" that help keep the rest on the road. The circle of life!

If you do this, be sure to take all the engine electronics including the idle computer, klima, and tachometer.

Keep the oil cooler with the engine. The 603 might have a bigger radiator. Take the shift linkage with the transmission. The diff might have a different flange despite the same 2.65 ratio. Exhaust system if it’s wirth anything.

Mxfrank has a point and you might want the speedometer if it reflects engine miles, but I don’t think you need the tach since EDS reads off the crank, not combustion pulses.

I don’t think it’s worth doing.

I’m with Sixto...

I don’t think it’s worth doing. I personally would have the head reworked and move on. I’m thinking from a time standpoint. You’ll be removing two engines and then installing one. I know how I work, I’d end up forgetting to grab something off the donor car so then I’d be going back and forth to get parts. I’d just have the OM602 head reworked. Of course, I’m getting lazier these days.

Transplanting it would take some time for sure likely not a great idea but now only have to remove motor mount bolts and out she comes cw wire harnesses speedo Guess i could just take engine rad oil cooler and trany check compression try and run it and save it for??? If it has a cracked 14 head return it for a pnp store credit.

You'd pretty much have to pull the transmission as well. The 603 would have a 722.3, the 602 would have a 722.4.

Its all mine now going to check compression i confirmer no.14 head. Im starting to think it was scrapped because of sls shocks failed and it likely ran poorly also.

Compression might not tell the story of cracks that expand as the engine warms. My SDL had compression within spec and started easily. Within a few minutes the radiator hoses were rock hard and it was spitting out coolant through the pressure cap.

Thanks if the engine checks out good compression I plan on hooking up radiator and running it for a few hours.

So far electrically one glow plug tests bad, fair amount of oil in turbo intake hose. Must be something wrong with engine the car was too nice to scrap just for sls but i guess that would be a $3 k hit at a shop.

Tell us everything you got off the donor car.

Your alternator is better than the 87 had anyway.

Engine transmission oil cooler still attached vacuum pump water pump fan radiator etc starter including wiring harness cruse control turbo intake exhaust manifold down pipe slightly longer than tailshaft flex disks drive shaft ip pump injectors a loaded untouched power train. Going back for cruse control computer glow plug relay and flying saucer. Nerver took speedo same max 230km per hour thinkinh about ecu.

Car had green antifreeze way tons of oil up front from no. 1 head gasket down. Trans fluid was nice and red what little was left. Gotta figure out a cradle for this so i can start testing. Lots of fresh diesel from the bango out of lift pump.
