I've heard the second gens are quite good. The first gens had some quirks, but generally they were good too. They seem to be better than the VW diesels.

I've not personally owned or driven one but own a turbo gas Cruze so has picked up some about the first gen's "through the grape vine". I don't think they have any huge flaws. They're a SOHC 2.0 with a timing belt - new design but related to older designs, if memory serves. Real powerful in comparison (264 lb. ft. vs. the gas 1.4T's 148) and capable of mid upper 40's. Only available with an automatic, in one trim package.

Second gens are pretty bulletproof, I guess. The DPF issues are essentially worked out, and people are getting 60+mpg with loads of torque. I think a couple guys on the cruzetalk forums are north of 50K miles without any issues or service engine lights.

I'd buy one today if I were in the market for a new car.

They may have. I was speaking purely of the first generation CTD's.

I don't have any specific knowledge on the Cruze diesel. A quick google search shows the previous 14/15 Cruze diesel sold about 6k units/year - well before dieselgate. My main concern when buying these small volume cars is availability of parts and skilled service technicians. There may be one parts depot in the US that stocks the more unusual stuff. Anytime you need something less common than an oil filter, it can be a three day wait for parts. Anytime it needs support from the manufacturer engineering team, it's at the bottom of the list below higher volume models.

It's probably a fine car. But for daily transportation, the service and support network behind it is equally important to keeping the car on the road. And I have found that aspect to be problematic on every low volume car I have owned.

The mileage of the diesel is amazing. But, I wouldn't buy any diesel today since the fuel cost is much higher than gas currently. A crystal ball on that would help. I would certainly spend much time reading up on the tech and reviews, since you don't want a tech gotcha 10 yrs from now. One son bought a gas Cruze new. The car had only been out a few years, but Chevy had already sold millions so I told him future parts should be easy and cheap (2nd post #10). It was a nice car, at a nice price. Too bad it was totaled. The kiss of death for any model is after they become ubiquitous as a rental car.
