Anyway, I said that it has a solid state controller because the diagram calls it "electronic unit for speed control", not that I have ever looked inside one and saw transistors. Still worth checking that controller out. I don't think Mercedes would call it "electronic" if it's just mechanical switches.

There is an electronic "box" that controls which part of the resistor tap is selected. It is the same system more or less that the W123 uses. It is clearly shown with the multitude of wires coming out for the various resistor taps. The Gen II is a 3-wire system. 12V, Ground, PWM. It comes straight from the PBU and uses a transistor module, it is truly "electronic", the early system is not.
