95 E300D W124 A few comments about my monowiper cleaning and lube

Much easier than I thought it would be.

Tips that were most helpful:

- don't remove rubber trim if just cleaning and lubing
- scribe matching lines for the top of the bolt for each of the shaft nuts ( 13 & 17mm ) and the flat metal arms that the nuts firm up to the splines. This allows easy proper positioning when putting back together. A Dremel cutting wheel would have been handy to make good lines for the future.
- use a pair of large vice grips to pop the flat arms off the splined shaft. ( unscrew the nut til it's at the top of the shaft. Put 1 jaw on top of the nut, the other under the flat arm and squeeze. Arm pops off )
- position monowiper arm in the middle. 90 degree up position. As if pointing to top of windshield. This allows little geared wheel inside to be removed from arced gear inside. Put back in this position when reassembling.

Clean away all old grease. I sprayed with WD40 and then blew off with air hose. That got about 95 percent of old grease out. I then used contact cleaner to remove WD40 and blew that off.

Lube choice was Molykote 33 medium. Excellent specs but didn't seem to have good sticking ability. Time will tell how it works. Wish Bosch would be helpful but to them proper grease and oil for the products is proprietary.

I left the motor together because it showed minimal usage. I did clean the outer copper contact area of old grease and used the M-33 on those contacts that rub the timing wheel. Also put on the surface of timing wheel.

Picture shows the shaft for the monowiper with a scratched line to aid proper positioning.

That rubber strip at the bottom of the glass is killing me. The plastic channel on the replacement windshield is junk and I can't get the rubber to stay in place. New MB rubber from dealer, and I can't find a source to buy an MB factory plastic channel that attached to the bottom edge of the glass. I'm tempted to just glue the whole thing down to the plastic and to the glass, but then R&R of the wiper in the future will require a new rubber strip, not cheap.

Texasgeezer found a source for that plastic channel. Precision WLM F740. Not factory but may work fine.

Molykote 33 Medium is a good choice for a lubricant. I used it on one of my W124's about 15 years ago and it has worked well in the daily driver. Used it for it's low temperature characteristics as temps can get down to -35 degrees C here.

Interesting! It's not clear to me that this part is the plastic channel I'm talking about. In my case, the bottom edge of the glass is free (not bedded in the sealant bonding the glass to the frame). There are two plastic channels (one on each side of the monowiper) that push up and clamp to the edge of the glass (one channel) and then there is a second channel in the each plastic piece that is at a 90 degree angle to the first, so it is pointing out (perpendicular to the surface of the windshield). The rubber molding strip has a bead which gets pushed down into this second channel.

I need to take some pix.

Is it your '95 E300 that you are talking about?
Look at Texasgeezer's post on Jan 16, 2018. He has pictures of the piece that he ordered.
It is one piece that goes from one side to the other glued to the bottom edge of the glass. They quite often break so it may have a piece missing and appear to be two pieces or maybe some of the aftermarket windshields don't have a proper channel.

Rick, thanks, that is it!

95 e300d, moulding below windshield that windshield&wiper rubber seal snaps into?

I'm going to order one soon. This is for my '95 sedan, with cabin filter. I can cut the piece in the middle to make it fit around my monowiper if needed. On my car, I had a replacement windshield installed and the plastic channel was junk from the start. It is a Pilkington windshield, which is now an OE supplier to MB, but they failed on this one. Now the replacement glass is cracking and chipped, too thin and weak compared to factory glass. I junked an '87 sedan last year and removed the factory windshield, and it looks like it will fit my '95 sedan just fine, but I was missing this critical piece to make the installation "perfect".
