the old honda fit cvt dont have a torque converter, they use a clutch pack to let the car idle with pedal in D and foot on brake.
hows that for a design - I call that moronic.

We have/ had similar cars probably due to the veg connection. I have not bought a Prius but may do so as the next car but need to do more research. 2 summers ago I test drove a few Gen I, II and III's. I like Gen II most because it does not have that space wasting center console of the Gen III. It's cool how quiet the engine starts and stops automatically without the conventional cranking noise of the starter. What part(s) is Toyota trying to protect when a few traction battery cells go bad and puts it into limp mode? It does have a 1.6 L engine that is fully capable of propelling the car without help from the battery. Probably the elec motors and eCVT?

The cheapest car is the one you already own.

Most folks who notice say my car is surprisingly a roomy car. Even for a tall person. I think right now is a good time to buy a Gen 2 cheap. Just a quick search on craigslist today I found a few under $2000 with battery issues, one is $700. Where else if you buy one without any issues, it's like 3-6K depending on condition. Quote:
In the picture above you can see the flywheel has no starter or no ring gear for a starter on the flywheel. It's all started with "Motor Generator 1 " (MG1) located in the transmission. Basically MG1 spins the internal combustion engine (ICE) at above idle speed to provide a seamless start. This fella has an depth explanation of a Gen 3 trans that is good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_mc17CoyJs Quote:
Here is a pic of the inverter that we pulled from my buddy's car during the engine swap. .

"When the triangle of death came on the battery fan was blazing away. I think the limp mode is protecting the extreme overheating of the traction battery and over loading of the inverter."
Your 2 bad traction battery cells must have failed in the shorted state. If it failed open, there is little current consumption so the battery cannot get hot. Is it possible to put the ICE into a mode to operate as a conventional engine with a failed traction battery?

Buy this truck:
https://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/d/ford-ranger-1990-manual-ext/6494230861.html It runs, it's got the suspension/engine/transmission combination you want, parts are ridiculously cheap. non-interference, so if you toast the timing belt it's no trouble.

And hopefully one of these caps is a long bed ( 7 ft ) The aluminum one is the one to buy since it is lighter, one person can load / unload it.
https://norfolk.craigslist.org/pts/d/cap-for-ford-ranger/6493332250.html Truck cap for small pickup. I have two-one hardshell and one aluminum. Both in good condition. Was used on an '86 Ford Ranger, but may fit other models. One set of clamps available. $50 dollars for the hardshell. $25 for the aluminum cap. |

What I meant was
Fix what you have. It will always be cheaper than buying another car. A new one is Big$. A used one will cost to buy, repair and make reliable.
This rule applies no matter the car maker. |

I strongly disagree. Entirely possible to be just throwing good money after bad. Very important to know when to throw in the towel, cut your losses and walk away.
