Drooling 'peeing' is a serious issue and leads to smoking .
You have to correct this before moving on to the IP timing . Of course, you know (?) that a valve adjustment is always done before fiddling with the injectors ? . Make a timing tool out of an old metal line, it's easier than you imagine once you get past the fear of screwing things up .

I rebuilt mine myself at around 135K miles. They were nearly perfect with the exception of a little dirt and could have probably lasted a lot longer. I'll probably do it every 60-100K miles, but just because I have the kit and shims now.

I am restoring the entire car and installing a used turbo OM617-952 that I imported to Australia from Canada. It has been about two years now since the original 617-912 engine broke a cam chain and well I guess you all would know what that meant.
I got the 952 in about a year back so the painter could drive the car in and out of his spray booth. It ran smooth and near smokeless then. Valve clearance has not been done and I do suspect the timing is out after the pump was worked on. I will get the manual out, make the timing tube (I have a spare set of injector lines), check the valve clearance and the cam timing marks. I have never done this before so fingers crossed. Thank you all for the advice |

You will be well pleased both with the end results and the ability to do all this work as these are well engineered yet simple cars making them fairly easy to work on .
The valve adjustment requires special wrenches, you can make better ones than Mercedes sells though .

I do not know when the last check was made. I have no history on this engine.
I will do the timing and adjust the valves. From all the advice it looks like the timing is the issue. When the pump was removed and reinstalled I bet/hope the mechanic just missjudged the alignment. I tried to get at the IP retaining nuts today, that's been a chore. I will report back how this turns out. Thanks all |

If you don't time the IP following installation, you are just stabbing in the dark.

+1
It seems anyone who claims to be able to replace or install an IP on a Mercedes diesel should know this.

Injector Pump Nuts
I had to make up a long and disjointed 3/8" drive extension with a universal joint , several 3" bits and one 6" one, then I used a loop of wire near the 17MM socket end to hoist it up to the inner nut .
Fiddly but once I stopped worrying about making a mistake the job went fairly easily . I set the timing 2 degrees advanced to 26* BTDC, so far it runs great and doesn't get hot, nail or whatever . I need to replace the improperly speced. injectors a member here did for me . As they pop too low and cause minor exhaust smoking .

I get so far then start worrying what if. So I stop and think it over, read a bit more and loose a day. Eventually it will turn out ok, just need to percist. |

On Target
You're so right ~
I'm a Journeyman Mechanic and have been working on things since the early 1960's yet I still sometimes let the 'what if I screw it up?' worries prevent me from getting started some times . Once I'm working I just go along and do the job, I'm often teaching myself a new thing as I go and when the job is finished I always think 'that wasn't so bad' in spite of issues and problems that crop up along the way like broken studs, wrong parts, so on and so forth . Sadly Peach Parts only allows me to post a picture _once_ (? WTH ?) so I cannot share the nice picture I took of my IP inner nut tool...... It looks simple because it is . Just remember to set the engine properly before you take anything apart and copy and print out the pages detailing how to do the job and leave them weighted on the roof of the car with a pen/pencil so you can use them as 'Cheat Sheets' and make notes as you go along . If you're handy with tools and basic repairs you can do this . Someone here should gather up used injector pipes, cut them and sell the ends as $5 timing tools .

Update,
After doing valve clearances, timing chain stretch check, rebuild injectors and finding the injection pump was only set at about 8 degrees BTDC. I gave it back to the workshop and it appears that the injector was installed one tooth out of alignment. The pump was pulled and reinstalled. It runs perfectly now, smooth and no smoke. What a relief |

Congratulations. Nothing makes a man enjoying his woman more than a good running engine.
