That all looks excellent Dan! Great work. I am anxious to see what you can do on the track now.

No vids. I have difficulty posting them so I tend not to take many. That said, I'll probably do some Gopros at the track.

Another tidbit: (cut & paste)

Refinement on the shutdown system. As a reminder, the challenge is to get the engine to shut off when the main power switch (located in the rear pan) is actuated, allowing the safety folks to kill the engine if needed. Anyhow, the system I was running worked OK but proved not to be robust which is kind of a big deal for a safety system. Pics of the refinement:

1) "Off" position. Note that the air solenoid is rearward and the arm of the injection pump is also back. This stops the engine.

2) "On" or "Run" position. The cylinder is contracted so the injection pump arm can come forward and allow the engine to run.

The change is the addition of the guide rod (1/4"SS, BTW). This keeps the toggle (I guess you could call it) moving in a predictable manner so that it engages the pump arm effectively. Works great! I have a few more things to reattach and anchor (I had to move stuff for working room) but other than that this is done.

Since this post I've found that the turbo shown is limited to 26PSI boost no matter what I do with it. The new goal is 40 PSI which may sound like a lot but is not too much for a performance Diesel. I contacted Tim Scott at Tim's Turbos (he's my turbo guy and EXCELLENT) and he determined that with the hot side on the old unit that's all it can spin. Tim works to keep the pressure differential (delta P but I can't find a Greek letter "delta" on my keyboard so......) to less than 1.5. Delta P in this case is the pressure differential between the exhaust manifold pressure and the intake manifold pressure which is, of course, the same as boost. As it turns out with this setup delta P is zero as close as I could read it at 136 MPH driving down the track (I don't take my eyes off the track at that speed). And SOOOoooooo I can stand more delta P which means the turbo can be spun a lot faster making lots more boost.

So here's where I'm heading:

Tim built me a new turbo which is taking a bit more effort to fit and make it work. At this size there is no internal wastegate so I've had to work in an external WG and associated plumbing. Following are a few pics showing the current setup. I'm almost ready to fire up the OM617 so I'll keep y'all posted.

The first pic shows the wastegate in place. Note the "T" right before the turbo. This gives a leg in the exhaust to the wastegate which is the device with the black circular cap to the left of the turbo base. Also note that the wastegate exhaust is ducted back to the exhaust pipe which exits the right front fender. It was tough to fit all of that in there especially given that I thought it wise to fit in an expansion bellows after the wastegate to allow for differences in expansion. As usual for me, 10 LBS of stuff in a 5 LB bag (or is that kilos on a German engine?).

A side effect of this installation is that the turbo sits out from the engine and the intercooler no longer fits under the hood (pic later).

So pic 2 is the tubing in place to take the boosted intake air into the cabin and back out to the intake after it's cooled. There are also some extra bits hooked up like the sensor for my new digital boost pressure gage. Anyone know how to rotate this pic?

Pic 3 (again needs rotated) is the intercooler in place in the passenger's side. This is really a simpler setup than I had before and generally simpler is better.
