Post OM617 Alternative crank bolts

Has anyone used anything but the expensive flywheel stretch bolts on an OM617?

The OM606 only use 8, and my big domestic v8 only uses 6.

Was this just another example of over-engineering?

$120 for flywheel bolts is a hard pill to swallow.

I re-used mine 8k or so miles ago.

I think the FSM has length and diameter numbers listed to determine if they are out of spec for use.

This thread Flywheel bolt size + Tightening torque references 616 flywheel bolts. I used 616 manual flywheel bolts to connect the 300D flywheel to my 617.

Something few people realise, same with head bolts. Out of 24 (multiple use) bolts I had between 2 engines, only 4 were not good according to the above specs. Just remember manual and flex plate bolts are different.

I re used in 2013, and they outlasted the body. As above, read the reuse guidance in the manual.

I used socket head cap screws from Fastenal due to my unique application and having to put a Toyota manual flywheel on a 617 with a spacer.

It has also been removed and re-installed. No issues.

Edit: I also used blue Loctite.

I'm aware of the stretch specs, but thanks for the link.

The trouble is, I don't have any Mercedes bolts at all. I usually don't cheap out, but when the flywheel bolts cost more than the transmission....

I probably have some, but they are not marked so I'd need dimensions to get the right ones. If you can provide dimensions I believe I can provide bolts.

Anything available from junkyards that keep engines around?

What about the Peach parts community?

Don't have time for junkyard runs right now, and I haven't seen a w123 in years.

I'll probably just throw the $15 McMaster bolts in. 12 seems like a crazy amount of overkill. SBC flywheels are about the same weight and have only 6 bolts.

EDIT:
Looks like ARP has these guys, 1mm short but they might work:
Ford Pinto 2000cc M10, 6 pieces
Kit #: 151-2801
($44/kit)

I think my bolts were in the ~$70 range.

Are you sure the factory bolts are TTY? I remember the specs being crazy low, 30ft lbs or something.

From the FSM....

OK, 30NM is 22ft lbs. Yeah crazy low.

I never did the +90deg, wouldn't matter as my replacement bolts weren't TTY. Interesting stuff. Nearly 40k miles now, no issues.

The spec is not 30 nm. It is 30nm + 90 degrees. The end result is a final torque that is much higher than 30 nm. If you are replacing the hardware with non-TTY, and you only torqued to 30 nm, your bolts are way under-torqued. The purpose of the +90 degrees is not to stretch the bolts, it is to reach the desired torque value with TTY hardware. With non-TTY hardware you still need to reach the target torque, which is something higher than 30 nm...

Yep, aware of all that. The spec I saw and followed was 30nm......and that's it. No +90 deg was mentioned anywhere so I didn't do it.

Yes my bolts are seriously under torqued. Nearly 40k miles and zero trouble later.......

The FSM for the OM617 turbo engine has on the first page of procedure 03-410 the torque specs, there are two. Initial torque (30-40 Nm) and then angle of rotation torque (90-100 deg).

Did you use the directions for your flywheel instead? Toyota specs? I think you should have used the MB FSM specs, glad you made it this far with no issues.
