How much time to replace three motor mounts and engine shocks?

I need to schedule enough time to replace all three motor mounts (transmission and both engine motor mounts) plus both engine shocks on the 1984 300DT. Any ideas?

Half a day. There’s some awkward reaching and you might run into stubborn fasteners. Remove the fan shroud for clearance. Remove the shocks first and install last. Note the orientation of the engine mount shields.

Are your oil colder lines in good shape?

Clean out those allen head bolts before you strip them!

Make sure to clean the heads on the Allen bolts.

And get them started by hand.

Stripping these can cause unnecessary frustration
And delay repairs

took me about 4.5 hrs to do just the mounts on the sides of the engine, but mine were completely collapsed to the point that the bolt for the mount was running into the side of the area where you are supposed to remove it, i had to lift the engine up a ton in order to even see the head of the bolt. also my bolts for fastening the mount to the chassis were missing, so had to go to the store for that

Time depends on you and what tools you have. Hope you aren't stuck Sun night needing the car to go to work Mon.

Unbolt engine shocks before jacking up engine or you will destroy the upper rubber mount. Need small open-end wrench to secure shaft from spinning (flats just above rubber isolators) as you unscrew lower 10 mm nut. One in my Craftsman SAE ignition wrench fits.

You need a selection of metric allen wrenches, including socket type. I recall one smaller top allen bolt (6 mm?) on both sides is a straight shot down w/ allen socket and long 3/8" extension. The other small top bolt (underneath engine bracket) requires an L-shaped allen key to get started, then a ball-nose allen to speed it out, but still some back & forth. From beneath, you must have an allen socket (8 mm?) and adapters for a 1/2" wrench or breaker bar. If the rubber collapsed, just force it thru to the allen bolt. If the steel bolt is corroded into the aluminum engine bracket, it will be hard to break (try back & forth, don't round out the allen head). Coat bolt threads w/ anti-sieze for next time.

Use the best motor mounts you can find (many posts), otherwise they will soon sag. I recently bought Febi mounts for $$ on ebay, but the box had "Made in China" and looked like cheap Uro mounts (usually India). Good Euro/Turkey mounts have embossing in the rubber and blue dots (ebay photo, but not what I received).

As mentioned, now is the time to replace the oil cooler lines. You can replace just the rubber hose (search posts). I used AC hose and ferrules for an almost-factory look, but w/o a Master-Cool crimper, Oeticker stepless ear clamps work and look slick (ebay). Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for your input! This forum rules, you guys gave me additional information that will be very helpful when I kick this project into gear. I've used a good degreaser to degrease the mounts from above and below. I took the car to the car wash to finish the job, everything looks a lot cleaner now.

I have two new lemforder motor mounts, a new meyle transmission mount and two new engine shocks to install. At present I don't have new oil cooler lines so that will have to wait......

Also, if it all goes to the birds and you NEED to drive the car: you can jam anything soft in there and slap a ratchet strop over the engine to drive around.

A lacrosse ball works great, just the right size and density of rubber. Ask me how I know.

Put he Bolts through one Mount and screw it in but don't tighten any of the Motor Mount Blots both bolts are installed.

I tighten one and had difficulty getting the other mount bolt in and bugged a couple of threads. Had to come up with a Tap to chase the threads and loosened the mount bolt I had tightened and easily got the other bolt installed.

The shocks are frequently good. Mine were and Roy said that he rarely has to change them. The shock mounts do go bad.

I thing the flats on the shocks are 8mm - at least on a 126. I think the motor mount bolts take a 10mm allen. It will need to be on a socket. I grind the end square with nice crisp edges then pound it into the bolt head.

An electric impact helps when taking things apart. Make sure you get the nut turning before using the gun else you may strip something.

Clean bolt heads, Squaring the wrench off, pounding it in & leaving the bolts loose on reinstallating can't be stressed too much.

Shock flats are 7mm.

MM lower bolt is 8mm Allen, upper bolts are 6mm Allen... I think... it’s been a while since I’ve been under mine.
