rebuilding an om606 head cost

My 98 e300 project car has a beat valve at 422k with a bad miss. I'm gonna have the head reworked because the rest of the car is in good shape, and considering my 99 has an original bottom end I'm not worried about rings or anything.

I want to try and save some money and bring them the head complete and just have them put in the guides and I'll install everything myself at work besides the guides.

What are people paying these days for having heads rebuilt? One of the glow plugs broke too.

The bad valve might need a new seat. The valves might need to be ground with new guides. I don’t think valves are ground by hand anymore.

Best price I found after talking to several machine shops in Canada and the US for a 603 which includes cleaning, pressure testing, check for truness to see if it can be rebuilt $100. Assuming it just needs to be decked new guides and valves ground $550. Then I would need to source prechambers if necessary, seal rings and new collars, without a new prechamber roughly $200. I think the 606 after decking needs a high polish finish due to the MLS gasket? Throw in new coolant head gasket 12 more valves to work on with the 606 and it wouldnt take much to hit $1200. Jake how many w210's can you buy for that?

Im not sure on the polish part, but I could see what you're saying. I paid $250 for the car so what would be $1200 if I sold it down the road for $3k? I sold one for $3300 with similar mileage.

BTW, I haven't paid more than $1000 for a w210 since I got into the om606 engines. except for the black 207k 99 I paid $3k for a couple years ago.

About 8 years ago I paid around $350 to have a local shop install new guides and seals, but I had to source the guides and seals for them. The valve seats were fine and the original valves were fine. They also pressure checked and checked for flat and fixed a broken exhaust stud.

The last one I had done locally was less than $400 IIRC. He pressure checked, machined the surface, ground the valves, and installed the seals I provided. I had to remove the prechambers and re-install them with new seal rings. Most any machine shop can do one of these, they are not unlike any other 6 cyl head that they would do. The only exception being the prechambers. Unless they are familiar with this type, you may (probably should anyway) have to remove the PC's prior to having the shop do the work. My guy had never done a Diesel head before meeting me, but with the PC's removed, he treated it like any other head, and it was no problem.

Rich thanks for the response. I couldn't imagine it being ridiculously expensive. I'm gonna take the head apart myself and do all the measurements myself to see what I need before hand, even though I know they'll do them again. I just wanna get this sweet car back on the road. It's pretty clean, a dime a dozen, but one more saved from death.

Thanks everyone for your contributions.

Yup. I paid $400ish for cleaning/testing/guides/grinding new seats/etc. Didn't deck it, but that would've been only $50 more.

Drop off a hard copy of the part in the FSM that specs out how much curvature is acceptable. If you don't need to deck it, don't.
