1960 Diesel stalls --fuel filter?

Hi-
My 190 diesel hasn't been running right lately. It stalls out after a while. As if the filters are clogged. Both the inline filter and canister filter are new. The hand pump feels like its pulling on a vacuum. The engine fuel pump seems to work OK on start up, then it stalls after being driven a couple of miles. ???

Back in the gas tank- is there a filter or mesh where the pipe goes into the tank? I've never taken the tank apart and the diagrams in the manuals don't show anything.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ok thanks Angus

Not sure about a 1960, but if there's a strainer in the tank, it could easily be clogged or collapsed.

A good way of testing is to run temporarily out of a bucket or bottle up under the hood. If it runs fine from that source, you know for sure that the problem lies in your hard fuel lines or inside the tank somewhere.

I'd run some biocide through.

Two miles is not really far enough. Symptomatic of a blocked fuel tank vent but not probable.

Could easily be a lot of junk in the tank that motion stirs up and obstructs the in tank filter though. Perhaps even water sloshing around in there. It is not unwise to clean out the fuel system in even newer diesels. Some are found to still be fine and others a mess.

Actually if the car is in general an unknown to you. Supplying fuel from a container might be a good start as already suggested. Over the many years if the car sat around a lot. The possibility of accumulated condensation in the fuel tank might concern me as well.

I had a 60s vintqge diesel and ended up removing the tank to boil it out at a radiator shop where it cost me 45 bucks to turn the car into a smooth running classic! Good luck!
