OM602 Throttle Linkage Access?

Hey guys,

My 91 300ds Throttle Linkage feels kind of crusty. I believe I have isolated it down the the ip linkage but I am not seeing a nice clean way to get down to it so I can remove it and clean/lubricate it.

It looks like like removing the intake manifold provides the best access.. I was hoping someone had better ideas.

Kris

That is going to be your best bet to get to all the linkages

In a 603 I can pop the IP rods off and on through the manifold runners and get to the rest after pulling the cruise actuator which goes behind the IP. Isn’t there free access between the IP and oil filter housing in a 602? Maybe there’s not much room?

I was afraid of that. I've got to address the linkage, the IP portion can stick if its WOT. Not good.

While the intake manifold is out, anything else I should do down there? I plan on addressing some seals on the IP as best I can.

There may be more room in there if I take out the cruise control actuator but it seems to me that the linkage goes between the motor and IP.

I took some pictures earlier the other day. Not great.

I also appear to have some kind of leak as there is stuff all over the runner.

Glow plugs, coolant temp sensor, delivery valve seals, injector line clamps...

If you wind up taking off the intake manifold, consider glow plugs if it's been a while since they were replaced. PITA to get at and pretty well require intake removal.

Sixto beat me to it. I'm a slow typer!

Depending on the time you have available, you might consider de-coking the intake manifold depending on how nasty it is too.

On a 603 I use a long screwdriver to pop off the sockets, then two long screwdrivers or long reach pliers to pop on the sockets. I posted a picture of this ages ago.

Check the gasket between the crossover pipe and intake plenum.

Appreciate the input guys. The glow plugs in there have 77K on them. Replaced in 2012. Shop charged me $160 to do the labor.

What seals are accessible with the manifold off? IP stuff I mean.

You should be able to get to the top (delivery valves and shutoff actuator), side and back end seals. Maybe the bottom seal if you move the compressor out of the way. The control rod sensor seal is replaced from inside the IP so don’t bother.
