Fix One Thing Then Something Else Breaks, E300

Well, I had the intake off of the ‘95 E300 today. I replaced some metal fuel lines and bypass hoses. I installed a new valve cover gasket. Put everything back together and there’s NO oil pressure. It will barely rise when accelerated. Sender is still plugged in. What could I have goofed? I guess I’ll be retracing my steps tomorrow morning. Ugh!!!

Update.

I left the car sitting for about an hour. Went back out to crank it and the oil pressure popped up to 3 on the gauge. It ran for about 3 minutes then dropped back to 0 on the gauge. Reckon something is getting stuck in the sending unit orifice intermittently? I’m gonna change the oil and filter first thing in the morning and see if that helps.

That's pretty well how my sender failed. Just one day, 0 oil pressure. It would sort of rise up to "1" or so on occasion, but otherwise nothing. Open the oil fill cap and see if you have oil flinging off the camshaft. If you do, there's oil pressure to get up that far and probably the sender or the wiring that's the issue.

Thanks!

I’m hoping it’s that simple. I have a few senders lying around.

Only thing I can add to this is be sure to disconnect your battery before changing the sensor. The main battery connection to the starter is right below where you will be working.

Aside from the sender going bad, which is fairly common(on my 94 e320 as well, working intermittently): the wiring harness(separate that includes the starter signal wire as well) is biodegradable and can short or lose continuity

The wiring harness has been upgraded.

Don't bother changing the oil, it won't help as you could be running water with a clogged oil filter and still have pressure. ( the filter system has a bypass )

Since you have a few sensors, change it and see what happens.

Well...

It’s actually due an oil change. It’s gonna get a change AND a sender.

There's a good chance it's in the wiring connector at the sender. After a couple hundred thousand miles I had to rework the wire on several senders. I suppose the heat and vibration takes it's toll.

Thanks!

I will check that Clemson88. On another note, are you in Pickens County?
