Depending on condition the price can be pretty high. The five speed is always a coveted option even if not OE. Installing the fiver would not take much effort. You'll need a shorter ds. Otherwise pretty much bolt in. Need crossmember too IIRC.

The OP won't directly answer simple questions such as where the car is and then flames the people who post.

I picked up a 300TD Turbo Auto two years ago for $6,500, 140,000 documented miles, second owner, local car from So. Cal coincidentally I knew the original owner. IMMACULATE everything worked, beautiful leather, all stock except for a badass stereo, newish high dollar paint but it had a salvage title from a wreck that was repaired many many years ago ago. This car was nice, stooooopid nice, that being said I would rather it had a stick but personally would be very hesitant to purchase a car that had been retrofitted with a manual as it could be a trip to Mod Hell. I have been to Mod Hell, as a matter of fact I visit Mod Hell daily and I don't like it there anymore.

You ask a super general question without any details in your OP. You want a price, but refuse to show a picture of your car (why you attached a picture of some random other car is beyond me). You are asked for a location, but give some vague economic statistic in response (bizarre). And someone shares their personal opinion (which was the point of your whole thread), and you attack them as claiming to be an authority.
Seriously, the only person in this thread showing any antisocial behavior is you. And now perhaps me as well, for pointing out your hypocrisy. If this thread reminds you why you don't hang out here anymore, I think the appropriate response is "don't let the door hit you on the way out."

I remember a few years ago there seemed to be 3 well informed level headed competent communicators / posters on this here PP forum. You seem to be the only one left anymore. The donor car has it all: flywheel, driveshaft, rear trans mount. It should all bolt right in. IF you are still in the architecture businss perhaps you can design a car barn for me sometime in the next few years. Just south of San Francisco. Good comments. |

I have a 5 speed in my coupe that started out as a Euro 280CE and now has a turbo diesel motor in it. With only 72k miles on it and looks like it just rolled off the show room. I think the car would sell for a premium over a stock car with a auto transmission. My son also has a 85' Euro 300D with a 5 speed and now turbo motor. His is rusting badly and has over 360k miles on the chassis. He has turned down many offers for over $4500 for the car from guys looking for the transmission and parts. I just picked up a 84' sedan with only 50k miles on it which he is going to swap has transmission into. This will replace the 85' which is his only car and daily driver. I would not be worried by a transmission swap, as long as the correct parts are used, like flywheel, front driveshaft and such.

Reading through this thread, it seems to me that the question should be "What premium, if any, should be attached to a W123 300TD-T with a manual transmission conversion?"
As a sub question "What premium, if any, is placed on the 5 speed vs the 4 speed?". As a recent buyer of a converted 85 300TD, with a 4 speed manual..... I'd have been reluctant to buy blind. I had the good fortune to buy from a friend who converted the transmission (documented on PP), so I was confident the work was done to a high standard. What premium would I pay for the manual? In my case, the asking amount was obviously a token amount (heh, the euro bumpers, headlights and trailer hitch value alone exceeded the purchase price), so I can't say that I paid a premium for the conversion. What would I have paid? Hard to say, I really like the car as an automatic, helps keep the boost up when shifting, and the auto suits the car. As the car is a hobby car, I've got to admit I like having the manual, it is fun. To me, I value the manual at the value of the car as an auto + 1,000 dollars. It's a rare conversion, and the enthusiasm is out there for these unicorns when done right. I've owned some that were not done "right", and they can be quite frustrating. Fortunately, this car does not exhibit any funny harmonics like some others. What's a five speed worth over the 4 speed? Not sure I'd pay anything over the 4 speed in the case of an 85 300TD. With the 2.88 axle that the 85 came with, it already feels like the 4th gear is an overdrive, you need to be @ 45mph before you drop it into 4th. Not sure an extra gear is really needed at all. My experience is that these engines like some revs. For other combinations, the overdrive might make more sense, like in a 240D with a 3.69 axle. A loose 5 speed is a valuable thing. Would that value translate into a higher price if installed in a car? I suspect a diminished return, if installed. Anyway, just a few thoughts from someone who has one..... Jim
