Anyone know the score on wheel alignments in regards to the "spreader bar?"

First time I had the job done I called around five places. Four of them said it couldn't be done properly without the bar, which they lacked (all were familiar with it, however). Fifth place had one and I got the alignment done.

Now I'm in Los Angeles and nobody I've called has a clue what I'm talking about.

Has anyone had luck getting an alignment done without one?
Better yet, where are you Southern California folks getting them done?
