New to the forum. 300d Owner

Hey everyone,
New to the forum. Just picked up a 84 300d. Has a couple small mechanical things that need to be fixed but super clean. Thinking about going to steel wheels with hub caps color matched and lowering springs but leaving it bone stock otherwise. Going to change out to euro bumpers and headlights as well. Enjoy! Oh yea, second owner, 126k
Kevin

Neat photo of the engine.
Looks like an ad from Mercedes.

Great looking. Do not lower it; drive it and enjoy the feeling the Mercedes engineers designed into it.

Lowered vehicles are more likely to get damaged. You'll have plenty to fix without doing that, but hey it's your money.

Happy diesel motoring!

Many an oil pan has taken bad hits with a normal suspension. There even was an aftermarket steel protector plate one for these cars. Maybe even a oem Mercedes option was available as well.

Looks fantastic and the color looks modern (factory or a re-paint?). Must have always been garaged, since too many years in the sun makes the clear-coat fail. Why change to steel wheels and hubcaps? I have only seen those on the less expensive 240D cars. Your alloy wheels look great. The only way I know to lower it is to put in shorter springs. You see many tuner kids in little Jap cars who can barely drive 55 mph on the freeway because they dorked-up their suspension.

The Euro headlights look great (~$300). The U.S. headlights were a goofy solution w/ plastic "headlight doors", just to install the round headlights, perhaps for a regulatory requirement. One easy thing to improve the look is to remove the plastic grill insert and paint it black (use special spray paint "for plastic"). If cracked, new ones are only ~$35, (still need to paint).

Just a matter of individual taste. I prefer the full disk hubcaps over the bunts myself.

The hubcaps date the car to the late 70's.
If going there I would remove the Turbo insignia from the trunk, and tweak the boost a little.

I'd be strongly against doing anything to change the stock condition of this car.

These older Benzes--especially a nice clean lower-mileage one like yours--are getting harder to find. As a recent new '84 300 TD owner myself, I look at these cars as a responsibility--preserve them, fix what's broken, and keep them in good shape so they can be passed along sometime in the future to someone else.

A couple of times in my old car owning history I've bought cars that were modified--lowered suspensions, body customizations, etc. and can tell you no one appreciates having to fix up/correct/restore what the previous owner did.

So I'd resist this misguided hipster notion of trying to pimp out your very nice 300D. Appreciate it for what it is now and keep it original because years later when these cars become even more rare you'll probably regret any changes you make to yours--even after you no longer have the car.

I'd keep it 100% stock. I wouldn't touch the bumpers or headlights either. The w123 may look objectively better as delivered in Europe - but this isn't a European car. Of all mercs with the bolted on huge US bumpers, the w123's handled them the best.

That engine compartment is a thing a beauty.

What a sweetie ! .

the Euro headlights are terrific, you're going to love them if you ever drive at night .

The Euro bumpers too but they're no where near as sturdy as the U.s. ones, I've barely tapped my Coupes' rear euro bumper and now it has two tiny dents, to me they're HUGE .

Take the time to do all the myriad tune up and periodic service things, and then drive the snot out of it, you're going to love this car .
