Shift Linkage Nylon Bushing Replacement / W210 ?

My brother's W210 '99 E300's transmission shifter linkage nylon bushings need replacement.

Is the W210's as easy to access and do as my '83 300SD's shifter linkage nylon bushings were?

Is there a tutorial here on diesel forum for this procedure?

Did a search on-forum, and there were no results for this.

You can get to the one on the shift mechanism from above. It is easy to pull the shift mechanism out.

Pull up wood trim, unplug 2 connectors in the rear (they just pull out - no lock tab), 4x 5 mm Allen screws and lift up. You may have to remove the “wish bone” rear vent duct but that is a slip fit.

Once you have it pulled up you’ll see it’s just like the older models. The clip securing the rod is removed and there’s your donut on the end of the arm.

Note that the shifter is half mechanical and half electronic.

P-R-N-D actually move the arm to the transmission. Once you make that left shift to 4 then you decouple the handle from the transmission arm, the arm stays in D, and only the electronic module inside the shifter determines the selected position (4-3-2-1).

Sorry but I haven’t paid enough attention under the E300 to see how the arm attaches to the transmission. I suspect this is similar to the older models as well; the early W210s still have a lot in common with the older 124/126 models.

It should be no easier or harder than doing it on a W123 or W126. I have always removed the shift arm from the transmission. It seems easier this way, especially not having to try to put the clip back on between the trans and tunnel. The shifter end is pretty easy, much more room on that end.

I thought about suggesting to do it this way, but there is plenty of room to do this end from underneath. Yes the rear duct has to be removed to get the shifter out from above.
