2 issues

Filled her up today as showing about a 1/2 tank on the gauge and
after going to/from the NJ meet had 313 mi on the trip odo.
Took 10.77 gal. to full! mileage 29.06 mpg!!! - thing is the car never gets more than about 24/25 mpg even on the highway....
um, did someone cast a special fuel economy spell on my car at the NJ meet or ??
not that i'm complaining or anything

oh, and another anomoly - the driver's side rear window now works!
(hasn't worked for 6 years)

maybe being in the presence of all those great diesels Sunday made my car 'self heal' !?

Bob

best guess on the window is maybe a wire came back into contact or the swtich started working again. At any rate, i doubt it will last for long. Once it breaks again, i'd look at the switch and/or wiring

thanks Ryan, i will check it out if it stops working again.. needless
to say the right rear window is the one that is seldomly used. btw how's that front end coming along ? is your car prowling the Fla highways again yet or what!?

Thumbs up Me too!!

Hello, I too have experienced this dramatic improvement in fuel mileage at times, always when traveling on a long trip when there is a moderate amount of cars on the road driving a consistant pace w/ little to no braking for traffic. I was so baffled one time that I consulted some aviation weather sites I frequent and got ground observations along my route and determined that I have had pretty good tail-wind components at times when I experienced the best mileage. The drafting effect plays a role as well, so the moderate amount of cars on the road played a factor to help the aerodynamic pig fight through the air at 70-90 mph. I just experimented with some 2 cycle oil in the diesel fuel, 14 ounces for the tank based on another post at another site, and it did run a little cooler and quieter, my fuel ecomony was 24.7 w/ variable winds and town driving. I wish I didn't have the 1985 300DT , 150k California model in almost pristine shape w/ the new trap oxidizerb just put in a few months ago based on recall, but I convince myself it's better for the environment, blah, blah... I badly want a 1984-1987 190D or 1986-1987 300 SDl; anyone want to trade?

adamb, yes I want to think that the improved fuel economy was due to a fairly decent wind on Sunday returning home on a highway run from the NJ Diesel meet and that combined with one long climb to the astounding altitude of approx 1000 ft above sea level ... but
i'm still wondering if somebody (turbodiesel??) put a good fuel economy or some sort of other spell on my car at the meet to explain this phenonema !
seriously-
my highway speeds were between about 70 and some bursts upto about 95mph and fuel is the same as always straight Citgo diesel. maybe the changeover from winter to summer diesel has a bearing on mileage?

mvk, thanks for the heads up i also am leery about this one window fearing that if i attempt to activate it ( down \wards) it will not go up again, on the other hand how do u find out if it will work or not if u don't take the risk! as i said it would not move
from the closed position for 6 years and all of a sudden it works both ways - i felt bold enuff to try it as it was a warm/dry day -it must be gremlins ?!

Hi Ryan:
Becareful of that fooling window. I have the same senario. same window. It works when it wants to. And guess what last year it went down but would not go up. That too in winter in NY. Man I was so upset. and at taht time my heating did not work thanks to busted aux water pump and busted monovalve mechanism.
I had frost bites on my butts. LOL
well after few days of shaking the wires in the door hinge it went up and since then never touched that switch. I plan to open it one of these days to see for any obvious loose connections if not found , I will unplug that window motor if unplugging it does not affect the function of other windows or anything else.( you know how stupidly interconnected things are on these cars) .So if you roll them down make sure you can put them back up.

I get about 23mpg at 70-75 in calm weather or a headwind. with a moderate tailwind at 65 I get about 28mpg.
