W116 300sd Battery

Own a 1979 300sd and it's time for a new battery.

I believe I need a Group 49 battery but not 100 percent. Costco says it carries that battery under fitment code 33.

Hope that it's the same size battery so that it fits in its tray.

Are group 49 batteries the appropriate ones for my diesel?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Group 49 should work on your car. Check out the MB dealership, their battery prices are pretty competitive and you'll be getting an AGM type too.

I called the MB classic center and a local MB dealer and both did not know if their battery was AGM.

Part number I got is 000 982 33 08

Looks like the dealer battery is not an AGM battery. Still calling around and researching.

Hmm... a member here got a MB battery for his w116 and stated it's an AGM.
Charging an Old Interstate Battery

But looking at the picture posted in the link. AGM's usually don't come with a health indicator eye like the one on that battery. So it may not be an AGM.

I called several autoparts stores and Napa does carry an AGM battery for $199.00. Kind of expensive compared to the Interstate batteries that I've used and never had issues. Costco wants $132 for their battery. The dealer battery is tempting at $167. It comes with a 2 year full replacement battery. Costco battery has a 3 year full replacement warranty. Sears also has a Diehard Gold for $143 and an AGM Diehard for $207.65.

There is a current promotion on the Sears AGM battery for $186.99 and they are willing to take another $10 off. Sounds like a good deal if the battery is actually a good battery

So for $40 bucks more I can go with a Sears AGM battery instead of the Costco regular battery.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

That's me! Part number 000 982 33 08, and it's an AGM battery. $167 list price, $150 after my MBCA discount. It sure spins the starter fast. And yes, group 49 is what you need. I'd just get one from the dealership.

I asked several MB parts guys and they don't think it's an AGM battery. I can't believe they don't know

That's a pretty good price. I'd choose the AGM battery over a flooded lead acid just because of the potential for corrosion on the car body.

Here's my thread about AGMs.
I am done with Flooded Lead Acid Batteries – an AGM battery is it! –

Interesting... I am thinking the health indicator eye tells me it's not.

I thought only AGM batteries had health indicator eyes on them? I've not seen a flooded lead acid battery with them, but have seen several AGM batteries with them.

I can't believe the skepticism about this being an AGM battery. Mercedes used to sell these as a flooded lead acid battery, but they had caps which could be removed for adding water. I'll have to dig out my receipt--I believe it is written "AGM" on there and before I bought my battery, I read several other posts about people recommending this same battery because it was an AGM battery and cost less money than the AGM batteries of other brands.

That's the other way around for me.

Flooded Acid Batteries usually have the health eye. All AGM batteries I have seen do not have them... And I've seen alot of batteries...

Called another MB dealer and the parts guy thinks it might be an AGM. He said he googled it. So is it an AGM battery or not because the battery itself does not say it's an AGM
