Tips on pulling out OM606?
I bought a 95 W124 with a good running OM606 NA as a donor for a motor swap. I have never laid a finger on a mercedes before. I need to get the motor and transmission pulled asap so the rusted carcas can be sent to the scrapyard (the mrs hates having a rusted out junk car in the driveway).
The driveshaft has been cut at the rear end and the back of the trans (for towing purposes). Everything else is still hooked up as this was a running driving car. What should I watch out for when pulling this motor/trans? Does the motor have an external oil cooler? Besides the mechanical throttle linkages what else should I grab from the engine compartment? I am not using the trans for my swap but leaving it attached to minimize time laying under the car. Thanks |

It does have an oil cooler, salvage everything you can to avoid a headache, DON'T chop or butcher anything.
You will need some special motor mount wrenches as well. When the engine is out reseal it, it's very easy and fast with the engine out, change out worn accessories too. If you want to get funny, pressure wash the engine with Samsclub degeaser, remove all that dirt and grime.

The 606 n/a in the 95 E300 doesn’t have an oil cooler I know because I own one. Best way is to remove engine and transmission together

I appreciate your guys responses. They leave me in the same situation as my research did. Some says it has an external oil cooler some says it does not.
Anything else I need to take? Anything associated with shutting the motor off, the fuel system, etc? |

Save headlights and center console they would be worth something remove rad fan ac condencer cut out cross bar. Fuel pump is mounted on engine as is oil cooler. Straight forward shouldn't take more than a few hours.

Someone used the 95 headlights for bb gun practice. The interior is pretty shot. The vinyl is coming off the console. People still buy them like that?

I understand there is a vacuum switch that can be used for shutdown control on the 95 OM606 NA. Where is it located?

The solenoid should be in the IP itself. The ignition switch is what sends vacuum to it to shut the motor off.
As others have said... cut the cross member and the radiator support. And probably the whole front cross section then you can pull the motor straight out. If you cut the cross member the engine is mounted to you won't have to unbolt it. Not difficult to do but with that out of the way you have more room to slide everything out. Since the car is rotted make your life easier and cut it. You'll need to unplug the transmission neutral safety switch and remove the speedo cable from the trans, there is one extra wire at the rear if I remember right and it pulls out. Unhook the shift lever and take the trans cross member off and thats probably all you need to do under the car at the back. Things to save... grab the glow plug relay. You can unplug the engine harness (hopefully it's not gone to powder) from the relay and the other connection for the temp sensor then leave the harness with the engine.

If you're stripping it out save the interior wiring harness and all devices for the power windows. This has the (fancy for the early 90s) one-touch express operation of the windows and can be retrofitted to an earlier 124 easily if the interior is stripped out.
Remember everything is modular on these cars, carefully follow the wiring and remove it in one piece.
