So... Jay_bob listed his TD FOR SALE...

And he twisted my arm, and... well,

I drove it home tonight...

Just got in...

My daughter wanted to drive it home, I was leading in my VW...

We are tooling down the interstate around 80... ac blasting... she calls me...

Dad... all the dash warning lights just lit up.

I thought maybe the alternator quit, then asked what is the engine temp.

She says itís close to 120, and the ac isnít running anymore...

I order her to pull over immediately, she shuts off the car, and I dump a gallon of distilled water on the Ip side, then the exhaust manifold side, to leach away heat quickly...

Assess the situation... of course, the belt is wrapped around the fan, etc...

It must have shredded, gotten sideways, and it clipped the small vent hose as well... everything else looked fine.

The trans cooler hose got hit, but just got tweaked up. The wire coil around it, protected it nicely.

I open the tire/tool storage bin, and a nice spare belt is sitting there... (thank you Jaybob!) I get all the belt bits out, put the cooler hose back, position the bleed hose back in place, top off the expansion tank, (doesnít everybody carry two gallons of distilled water with them everywhere?) replace the belt, start it up... no odd noises... I hit the road, the #14 head holds 80 all the way Home...

Gotta love these cars, and their quirks.

Yeah so John calls me up around 5:30 pm last night and says, yeah I want to come get it with my daughter. They arrive just before 10 pm, we close the deal, his daughter says I want to drive the Mercedes not Mom's Vee-Dub wagon. She pulls away with the biggest grin...

I'm really surprised the belt went like that. Although I don't think I ever took that car up to 80 in the whole time I had it...

When we rebuilt this thing back in the fall of 2012 we put a new belt on. It's had a new tensioner, shock, spring, (606) fan clutch and fan, water pump, ac compressor, and an alternator from an early 90s 300E. So literally the only rotating things on the front of the engine that have not been touched since I had it are the power steering/SLS pump and the crankshaft pulley.

I remember you telling me to stick the old belt back in the spare tire area at the time and you said, you'll never know when you'll need that one day...

Glad you had what you needed to get the car home safely.

Post Drive Belts

SWMBO always looks at the box of spares that contains the last set of V Belts I replaced in our old Mercedes (other vehicles too), once every few years I need to replace a weepy return fuel hose or other small item on a road trip far from home ~ I'm one of those pedants who gives the belts a twist occasionally and the instant I see any tiny cracks I order up new ones and replace at the next oil & filter change, toss those I just removed in the box and the previous old spares in the trash as they age out even just sitting .

Hate to be a prick (OK, sometimes not), but I don't know of an engine that doesn't break a belt. It seems quite common for serpentine belts to get tossed, since they don't like any misalignment or even splashed water. I especially wonder about Chevy Corvair with their very long V-belt with a path that turns 90 deg into another plane.

Post V Belts & Angles

Funny you should mention the Chevrolet Corvair ~ GM couldn't figure out how to make the V Belt make two 90- degree sideways turns, Gates sorted it out and got the contract .

Corvairs are still tossing random cheapo brand V -Belts......

This is a perfect example of how anything can fail at any time. In this case the buyer understands that.

If this car failed while being driven by a shop, I bet some would say " make the shop pay for it ."

See post 7 How much should I charge for work?

how could my om617 be compromised so quickly?

Oh, I have zero blame to jay about the failure... just my crappy timing having it fail at 11oclock at night on the freeway...

I was more pleased how quickly my daughter realized it, and responded. And how easily we got back on the road without issue.
