OM 616/616 Oil Filters
? what about Purolator brand ? .
So far I've never once seen any filter fail like this . I don't think it any problem .

Realistically, pretty much all the filters are perfectly fine. Billions of miles driven on them in millions of engines.
Before using a Purolator(or maybe after, depending on how important the $$ is to you), crack it open and take a look inside.

There is a rubber seal on the bottom of the filter element which slips over a tube in the housing. The filter element probably just stayed stuck to that and pulled out of the filter can as you lifted it. If true, you probably had to reach down and pull the filter element out separately. If so, everything sounds fine, and you definitely had a good seal at the bottom, which is what really counts. 3000 miles w/o a filter probably wouldn't cause significant wear, unless a bearing failed or such.

Yes reached down and pulled out filter element separately. Engine is OM617. The filter looks short because of the elevated angle of the picture.
