Hello, I'm new here, so if I am at the wrong place, just tell me and thank you :)


I have a main issue with my 190d 2.5 from 89... First, is this pipe (obviously someone touched it) from a previously turbo install? My car is no turbo from stock but many years have passed! Someone told me is the turbo sewer?



Second thing is, what is it used for? And how to "seal" it? Is there a designed stock screw for the job? Thank you very much!

Hello Paisana. Welcome to the forum.

I don't have any direct experience with the 190 engine but have a load with the 617 both turbo and NA, from the 123 cars. I expect you mean by "sewer". a drain.

It appears to be an oil return line from the turbo bearings. Oil goes directly from the oil pump to the bearings and once past the bearings it is returned to the pan.

...So I speculate that on this car the turbo went bad and was removed as a measure of economy. The drain line hose was then cut off and I specuate filled with a solid plug and clamped.

The way it is should work fine. I'd just keep an eye on it and if it comes loose or begins to split from age, replace it. It's not under pressure and is there to keep dirt from entering the crank case.

Or a formerly turbo engine was installed in a non turbo car.

Be sure to replace the missing bolt on the top front of the motor mount bracket. ( There should be 4 bolts in this bracket )

Thanks for the replies, I actually took the screw off since it has a low torque... It is a screw with a pipe connecting at the other end (the closed end).

Isn't there a standard mercedes screw to just close the hole? The screw thread is strange and I can't seem to find one around the usual markets.

Many of the MB plumbing fittings are metric non-tapered thread (I don't have any hands-on with the 190 but both of my OM617's have this feature). There will be an O-ring under the head of the fitting that acts as a seal. Take the old fitting to your Parker or Swagelok store and they'll hook you up with a plug if that's the way you want to go. Or, as stated above, just keep an eye on what you have.


I'd agree that someone probably replaced your originally non-turbo engine with a turbo engine but didn't want to commission the turbo in the non-turbo chassis - though it would have been worth the effort! Diesels LOVE boost!
