1981 240D new brake pads - looking for calipers!
 

Good LORD this thing stops a million times better!! Did have a little smoke from front driver side last night but gave the wheel a few kicks and took it out this morning and it’s all good - stops in a straight line and infinitely faster!

That said, my calipers are rough and kinda gross - I am SO underwater on this silly hobby mobile but if any of you have old calipers rebuilt or core, I’m interested. I just can’t afford to buy rebuilt right now so I’d prefer cores I’ll rebuild myself. Mine (the front set) are ATE but I’d do bendix or ATE. If you happen to have a set sitting in your parts hoard, PLEASE consider letting me take them off your hands. I too have a good parts hoard and would love to trade - have cruise/wiper arm with wires intact and an extra clean and working fuel sending unit, rear springs, spring pads, etc.

Your car is absolutely stunning. By "gross" do you mean dirty, rusty etc? As long as they are not sticking or leaking then they should be fine.

A proper rebuild would be replacement of the piston, orings etc. Sorry no spare parts here.

Thank you!! It’s been a little more work lately than I’d have liked but I just love driving it. By gross I mean krusty rusty and just a little weepy/sweaty but still (for now) doing their jobs. However, they should get a rebuild but I fear there is NO WAY those rusted ass screws are coming out of these things in one piece.

Here we are with a morning coffee - my neighbor with the S550 is a lovely ninety-something y/o woman in a house from the 1800s. And I’m the thirty something with a MUCH slower and older Benz, ha!

I wonder if the calipers from a '81 300SD might not be the same? Rebuilds are pretty cheap.

No. W126 features vented rotors on the front. W123 rotors are solid front and rear.

The rotors yes, but the calipers?
Never mind. I just looked them up on this site's parts catalog. They appear to be different.

Huh, NAPA has remans for $73 a pop for front calipers - that’s not bad at all - anyone have experience with that or another reman?

If you can sir, drive her until it can be parked. Then take the calipers in to a rebuilder. This way you will keep the OEM/original part and they will replace the seals, pistons etc. They really only need a day or afternoon to do so. This way you don't have spare brake parts laying around!

This is also a good time to replace the wheel bearings, flex hoses, rotors etc. Wheel bearings are easy as cake on the W123, they have to come out to replace the rotors anyway!

Vented rotors are much thicker than solid ones. The caliper dimensions have to be adjusted accordingly.
