OM606 AC compressor clutch
Hi everybody,
i'm exploring an AC problem with a '98 E300D. I have not yet been through a full on diagnosis of the problem but at this point i'm thinking its a problem with the AC compressor clutch. I'm seeking information about compressor and clutch on this car and a source for just the clutch. anybody have any info the can send my way i would appreciate it. Phil |
Check the stored codes in your CCU. See if code 1419 is stored.

Ok. I’ll have to learn how to check those codes. Based on the “over the phone “ diagnostic work I’ve done with the owner and what I’ve read about the fused clutch these have in them I’m thinking it’s the clutch. I will be able to put my hands on it tomorrow morning but I wanted to go ahead and get the ball rolling on getting a replacement clutch. I already called my guy at car quest auto parts. Just the clutch is not available through world pac.

No cold air. Compressor not engaging. Static pressure 100psi. New ccu. All I know at this point.

Yes, our Columbia friend couldn't take the heat any longer. I have the car now. going to be getting into it later today.
First step for me is going to be checking the clutch. sounds like he has already determined on his own that the compressor is not seized and there is refrigerant pressure in the system. |
This is the compressor clutch for sale on ebay.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-2003-Mercedes-Benz-E320-6cyl-3-2L-AC-A-C-Compressor-Clutch-Kit-7SB16C/263483574702?hash=item3d58d849ae:g:5TYAAOSwOYFae0PQ The compressor can be a 7SB16C - if it is, then dont even bother with the clutch, the whole compressor is garbage, it has a design fault in it where one of the suction valve reeds breaks off and trashes the compressor. - The fuse probably opened up by a momentary siezure of the compressor or a real bad air gap on the clutch. - if the gap was OK and you found an open fuse, the compressor will die shortly after installing a new field coil on it. The upgraded compressor is a 7SBU16C. All the chinese clones you see on sale are of this design too. It is identified by a smaller diameter variable valve on it. (US quarter size) - the older 7SB16C has a pretty big (fender washer sized) valve. |
Just got to the garage and went right away and checked the stored “eb1 codes”
Yes, code eb1419 is stored. I can see the compressor clutch looks like it has oozed some black goo out from around the center. I can also see that the clutch is trying to engage. Looks like it will engage for a few seconds every now and again. Also have codes 231 416 417 418 And 419 I’m going to look for an index of those codes now. |
Spin the compressor hub by hand. Can you turn it a full 360 deg smoothly or is it notchy of binding. If it spins smoothly, your compressor is still heathy, it's the clutch or coil that failed. MB took a reliable Denso compressor that was used on millions of RWD Toyota and Lexus models in the 90s and added the thermal fuse to the coil. More often than not the fuse fails long before the compressor.
