Cabin air quality (not strictly diesel)

I have often wondered about this, mu old 210 had a large cabin filter under the passenger dash area, not sure if the 124 has this - will take a look.

Good to see E Class come out on top though.

Wow, the W116 doesn't have a cabin filter at all. I had thought about adding one, but am not sure how to go about it.

Late 124s (from ‘93?) have a cabin filter above the blower intake. It’s not an easy retrofit for older 124s.

I did it on my w123. I recently removed the cowl cover where the filter resides, it was crazy dirty in there. I am glad I put a filter to keep that crap out of my evap box. The only thing I didn't do yet is a filter for the recirculated air.

Wow, that's really neat. My W116 is setup very differently, though. The intake for the blower case is on the far right of the car and I don't think I could fit one through the firewall like that. I had thought about sandwiching a filter between the cowl opening and the blower motor case, but filter changes would be a bit difficult as the blower motor case would need to be lowered, if not removed, each time, and that's a lot of work on its own. It would be nice to have a cabin filter in my W116, but it doesn't seem to be feasible. It's interesting that the W110 and W111 fintails from the 1960s had cabin filters, but not successive chassis.

Pretty sure mine doesn't have it as blower removed couple of times for lube, wiring check, that said there is a ton of room around that area -

Does the fan motor need an upgrade to pull the air through or may be settings change, 1 becomes 2 and so on.

Related to the original topic and also equally important for cabin air quality, check the bulk head seal for gaps or lack of composition.

i have seen a few engine bays with no bonnet liner, this too is also important as it forms the seal with bulk head - if either of these two are in need of repair engine fumes can enter directly through blower intake which sits just behind, or at ;east on the MB's I have worked on (possible W116's as above are different)

Bulk head rubber to the rear of engine compartment.

like the older Mk2 vw golfs and jettas had, a fabric was tied with a rubber band around a plastic cage which sat on the blower intake in the wiper cowling area.

cheapest air filter I ever saw.

I saw you had some sheet metal work done on the cowl intake. Too bad you couldn't figure out how to install a filter while you were in there. Some cars require the glove compartment to be removed to get at the filter. Is it possible to do the same? I forget what a w116 setup looks like.

That rubber band plastic cage filter might be a good idea for the recirculation side on the w123. Thanks for sharing.

I think the big problem with a dirty cabin filter in the W210 is that it makes the blower or fan motor work really hard and does not let it slow down. That has caused a lot of motor failures. All air pushed by the blower goes through the filter -- it is drawn through the filter by the motor. I changed my filter after I bought my '98 e300, and the filter looked like it had never been changed. I now change the filter every year or two and the motor runs lower speeds.

I might have been able to install a filter that slides out from the cabin, above the blower motor housing, but there is insulation that goes in that area, and I still don't think there would have been enough room. It could have probably been done so a filter is removed from the engine compartment side, though I'd have to cut out the firewall pad weld in a frame for the filter.

Another thing is the cowl actually continues past the opening for the blower motor case and goes down to nearly the passenger side door. In the end I decided it was too much hassle. I'll just vacuum out debris from the evaporator every few years.

I am wondering if my '96 S124 had these but were removed at some point, Kent mentions 124's cross over '93 onwards.

Perhaps they could even be retrofitted on earlier models?

Would fitment be included on vehicles data card?
