Cabin air quality (not strictly diesel)
I have often wondered about this, mu old 210 had a large cabin filter under the passenger dash area, not sure if the 124 has this - will take a look.

Wow, the W116 doesn't have a cabin filter at all. I had thought about adding one, but am not sure how to go about it.

Late 124s (from ‘93?) have a cabin filter above the blower intake. It’s not an easy retrofit for older 124s.

Pretty sure mine doesn't have it as blower removed couple of times for lube, wiring check, that said there is a ton of room around that area -
Does the fan motor need an upgrade to pull the air through or may be settings change, 1 becomes 2 and so on.

Related to the original topic and also equally important for cabin air quality, check the bulk head seal for gaps or lack of composition.
i have seen a few engine bays with no bonnet liner, this too is also important as it forms the seal with bulk head - if either of these two are in need of repair engine fumes can enter directly through blower intake which sits just behind, or at ;east on the MB's I have worked on (possible W116's as above are different) Bulk head rubber to the rear of engine compartment.

I think the big problem with a dirty cabin filter in the W210 is that it makes the blower or fan motor work really hard and does not let it slow down. That has caused a lot of motor failures. All air pushed by the blower goes through the filter -- it is drawn through the filter by the motor. I changed my filter after I bought my '98 e300, and the filter looked like it had never been changed. I now change the filter every year or two and the motor runs lower speeds. |

Another thing is the cowl actually continues past the opening for the blower motor case and goes down to nearly the passenger side door. In the end I decided it was too much hassle. I'll just vacuum out debris from the evaporator every few years.

I am wondering if my '96 S124 had these but were removed at some point, Kent mentions 124's cross over '93 onwards.
Perhaps they could even be retrofitted on earlier models? https://youtu.be/WnFLmfYctsk Would fitment be included on vehicles data card?
