Trans swap question!!

I have recently purchased a 1985 300TD. The wagon has a bad trans, thus a swap. Will the flywheel and transmission (4 speed) from a 1971 220 Diesel work? Would really love to make the wagon a manual and not spend a ton doing so

Thanks

The basic answer is YES. However, Beelzebub resides in many places.
The manual trans flywheel will have to be match balanced to duplicate any imbalance in the auto trans flywheel, and then installed on the crankshaft in the same relationship.
A custom pilot bushing/bearing will have to be created.
The intermediate plate from the '71 will have to be centered to the crankshaft of the 617, unless the 617 inter plate has a good centering ring.
A W123 pedal set will be required.
W123 shift rods will be required, or the rods from the W115 modified.
The front section of the driveshaft is a different length.
Other bits that do not immediately come to mind.

If you decide to keep the auto box I have one from a 85 300D (unknown condition) and 85 300SD (car at least drove before smashing into something). You can have the 300D trans for free, and 90 bucks (price I paid at yard) for the SD if you come get it. I have piles of torque converters you can pick from also, the 85 D converters had a slightly higher stall rate which made them desirable for off the line performance with lower rear ends. I am on the front range, PM me. Need to reduce the piles of crap I have around the house and am phasing out the non 722.6+ things I have collected over the years.
