Rebuild the vacuum pump 1984 300SD

Used to be able to get the MB kit for less than $30. Why have the rebuild kits gone over $120?

Can they be had for less?

Thanks

You are lucky if they can be found at all. Also if you intend to do a complete rebuild there is actually 2 kits. One for the Piston and another for the actuating arm.

Cheaper to get a new pump with a warranty.

Look up some threads on how too much timer gear end play on the intermediate shaft bushing can destroy your Vacuum Pump and has a good chance of damaging your engine.

Kits with the valves are NLA. There are a few with the roller but the price was too high for me to take a chance on them not working. There used to be Piersburg pumps available which are from the OE manufacturer and cheaper than from MB. Now, even Piersburg are NLA and I bought the least expensive OE pump that I could find. Availability is going down and price is going up. Keep your old one in case the parts are useful in the future. We may be forced to come up with a way of making an electric or some other pump work when the current supply is used up.

Ebay had a few kits. The kit with the articulating arm and roller was $335.00.

Member Stretch had some threads on rebuilding the piston type vacuum pumps with some interesting pictures.

A new pump was about $300 a few months ago. The check valves are what I think was wrong with my old pump not the bearings or arm.

I never saw the kits for your piston-style pump for <$100 in the 15 yrs I have been fooling with these. The earlier diaphragm pump kits are ~$15 last time I looked. I think you could fit a diaphragm pump to your engine. It has 2 tubes. Downside is I think it wears out faster.

If you can't find a rebuild kit, you can piece together some parts. The bearings on the roller are standard PN (many posts). VW's pumps used the same disk check valves and those kits are available. The piston seal would be the toughest, since a special leather-teflon part. I envision no easy industrial alternative. There are teflon piston seals and O-rings, but they don't stretch so couldn't be worked into the groove. Other types of O-rings probably wouldn't last long. The outlet check valve fitting is also expensive, so you often see those gone on junkyard cars. You can take it apart and possible clean the innards. Seems someone could make a replacement kit for the innards cheaply.

An electric vacuum booster pump from a modern Euro diesel car (VW, Audi, ...) is a possibility, and some have tried them, with mixed reports. Some say the constant bleed of the VCV makes them run too often and possibly fail. That wouldn't affect people w/ a manual transmission.
