Cost to perform a clutch on an 82 240d

Looking at a car on cl and suggests tlc ,best case is it's still drivable , worst case I'll be wrenching on it immediately.

I bought a clutch kit from Penguin for mine (240D Getrag trans behind an OM617) which worked well until I doubled the HP. Then I went to a sintered copper disc with the Sachs (what I got from Pelican)pressure plate and that's holding the current HP. Remember, if you get the flywheel turned the pressure plate surface has to be reduced by the same amount as the friction surface.

This is not a very difficult trans to R&R. Try not to lose the fluid out of the slave cylinder line as they can be a stinker to bleed. Also, the driveshaft can be a handful to break lose at the rear of the trans but again it IS doable. Label the linkage so you know which rod goes to which lever and that will go back together easily - I recommend buying new shifter bushings when you order the clutch kit.

As long as the car isn't rusty it should make a reliable (if slow) driver.

Thumbs up

Just had a flywheel turned for my 7.3, ran me $71.xx with tax out the door. That is a 46lb flywheel to support a 13" clutch. Should be less for that 240D.

Figure full clutch kit about $300 w PP, TOB, pilot bearing, and clutch.

Consider new flex discs and a trans mount while in there!

If you get it done, a day's labor, and shop around for the clutch kit, about $200 +/-. Just remove the receiver/slave cylinder instead before dropping the transmission instead of breaking the seal on the clutch hydraulics. The 82 and on is the aluminum transmission so it's light, easy on and off.
