190D lifter
On a 190D (OM601 engine), is there a simple test to check if the lifter are OK or not ?
And if just one lifter is worn, is it better to replace all the lifters or just the defective lifter ? It's for a friend of mine whose his 190D is doing some clapping noise. The car has 130k. Thank you. |
Next oil change, replace the two little o-rings on the center shaft of the oil filter housing cover. They allow the oil to leak down from the head when shot (they are NOT in the oil filter box, get them separately). When the lifters go dry, they take forever to pump back up.
Synthetic oil will help, too if they are just dirty. The clack when bad, a distinct noise different than a bad injector, a solid metal on metal noise. The cam has to come out to replace them -- if the o-rings don't fix the problem I'd go for replacing all of them at once. Peter |
psfred,
I'm going to order some filters, hood pad, etc for my new purchase. (from fastlane) I'll change the same o-rings. What exectly do I ask for? |
In fact, the clapping noise appears in a random way. It can appear at the starting of the engine or even later when the engine is at operating temperature. Over 3000 rpm, the noise decreases and disappears.
If a lifter is worn, I guess the clapping noise will just appear at the starting of the engine or all the time. So, does this noise come from a lifter, an injector or something else ? |
My car will make a lifter type clicking from time to time. It's like it gets in this clicking mode which is gone the next time I start up or sometimes it just goes away after running it a little bit. It still runs like normal when I hear the clicking. Mercedes has checked my engine out pretty thuroughly so I am not too worried when I hear it. And it doesn't do this on a regular basis.

Thank you for your responses 190D22 and psfred.

gnolo:
Sounds like a bad lifter -- an injector almost never makes intermittant noise. I used some o-rings from an assortment I had lying around. The dealer or parts supplier will know what they are -- I don't have a part number. Please note that these o-rings almost never get replaced, and that they are only present on the 601/602/603 engines or V-8s -- the engine in the 300TE has a spin-on oil filter, and I think the 2.3 L in the 190 does, too. Lifters on the gas engines are easy to change, just remove or displace the rocker arm. On the diesel, the cam must come out. Peter |
