You must have an air leak somewhere or broken valves in your lift pump. The 606 fuel system isn't that different from the 603, and even from a bone-dry system, it usually takes me no more than 3 30-second crank cycles to get mine to splutter to life. The lift pump moves a fairly LARGE amount of fuel for every stroke, it should be able to quickly prime the fuel system, especially if you did the hard work of pre-priming it.

Are you sure you don't have a problem with the shutoff solenoid?

The 60x series engines are self-priming, that's why they don't have the primer knob.

What would be the best way to diagnose the problem?

I cut into the wires in the sov does it suppose to click when opening or closing ? How can I bypass the sov? The plug on the ob2 not working. What can I do to get it to start? Thanks for the help. Greg

Do you smell wet diesel fuel under the hood ( bonnet)? If so, can you source it? That may be your problem.

Maybe too early. Fuel shutoff valve changed properly? Wise to set up to suffocate engine when changing them as well. Some people have had runaways.

Why did you change the fuel shut off to start with? I would take the vaccum line off it just to make certain it is not getting vacuum while you are cranking.

When ever I replaced a clear fuel lines on my E300TD I would park it on the driveway nose down with a full tank and do them one at a time and start the car after each line. When doing the fuel filter I also park nose down and prefill the filter with diesel.

You might try jacking the rear up.

I use air tech diesel fuel pump like Greg mentioned. U can ask for fuel pump for 2000 Chevy 6.5 diesel They are common and small and easy to put anywhere under the hood. Put a 617 pre filter or some pre filter before the pump.

Greg what is wrong with the sov ? Do u ha e any engine codes ? My 1997 and another friends had a no start and if the code references diesel injection system it is probably the big relay under the hood. K44 relay it might be called. U could probably jump the wires there in the relay too just to make sure it’s always getting on with the key on.
That controls power to the sov. Replaced that and been good ever since.

It would be cool to bypass it though if it works. Those are leaky annoyances and I don’t think it actually shuts off the car. It’s just for security I think and rfid key functionality. I want to try it now.

One more thing that can cause these to not prime or loose prime sitting. The bolt on top of fuel filter. In 1995 they had Some weird two part bolt with the fuel shutoff on top for emergency stopping. My friends car was always losing prime and she had to park on hill all the time or it would loose prime. I couldn’t figure it out for anything. Replaced all the lines and o rings. I dropped the fuel filter bolt and lost it one night and replaced it with a regular fuel filter bolt from a 1997 606. Car never lost prime again. She was ok not spending 136.00 on a new bolt with the shutoff.

Anyway not likely if you you have the simple bolt With no shutoff but if all else fails maybe try to replace it anyway.
