Do I need a OM617?

I have three 240d/OM616. Luckily I scrounged a couple junk yard cars to provide parts for a blown motor and other general-use items. I am in the mode of scrounging parts I may need in the future to keep these cars running.

I found a "240d" that has a "biodiesel" plate on the trunk but it actually has a 5cyl turbo, OM617 motor in it. I am trying to figure out which parts I should scavenge. Other than body/chassis parts, what mechanical parts will work on a OM616?

Is the differential geared different?

Is the biodiesel likely to have ruined fuel system parts?

Is it worth pulling the entire motor?

Biodiesel is great for the fuel system, as it keeps it clean and lubricates it better than diesel. Waste vegetable oil is another story as it depends on several factors, and it can destroy a fuel system if not done properly.

If cheap enough. I would run and evaluate the turbo motor. Depending on the results and you have enough storage room.

A good used 617 turbo motor is probably going to be hard to aquire. Either cheap or easily in the not too distant future.

Also like a lot of things in life when you need or want something right away. It can be much harder to locate. Usually more expensive as well at the time.

The rear end may have been changed with the installation of that engine. The ratio is noted on one corner of the rear of the differential. I think 3.69 is the 240d ratio. Remember if you take the rear end and it is not a 3.69. You want the instrument cluster as well. The speedometer heads are calibrated to the rear end ratios. It might be a 3.07 or 2.88 installed at the time of the conversion.

I only can wish I could hunt parts in an area like yours with no rust basically. It is almost impossible even to find a decent used fender up here in eastern Canada.

Pull the whole drivetrain if you can. The rear end ratio is not the same. I hear a turbo 617 will overpower a 4spd manual, so they don't last behind one.

The problem with cars in the wrecking yards down here is that the interiors are usually completely fried and useless. Uncracked dashboards and door panels never seem to turn up. A lot of cars also come from out of state due to snowbird owners, so not only are they rusty, but they have also been baked by the sun. But, with that said, finding non-rusty sheet metal is a lot easier in these parts.

Moon 161 that just isn't the right way to look at it!

I hear a turbo 617 will overpower a 4spd manual, so they don't last behind one.

That 240D 4 speed is plenty strong enough that you can throw everything a 617 Turbo has at it and it can handle it. No problem! Actually that transmission was used behind some of the gas V-8's, I think up to the 4.5, but not in North America. However, everything has it's limits and given enough miles and enough dirt, every thing sooner or later will need service.

rear end of a 300d is 3.46 and turbo 300D is 3.07. 200/240d uses 3.92 / 3.69

4spd is stronger than 5spd our dad had a 5spd blew up 4spd swap and fine for many years.
