Agreed. You definitely don't want to vent the 134a, so leaving everything hooked up is the wise thing to do since the car can't currently be driven. It appears that either it has a Sanden retrofit with the discharge hose running up top, or just that hose replaced and running the factory R4.

Don't pay any attention to the naysayers, you are doing a great job, and learning much in the process. If you decide to pull the trans first, you will learn something I am sure. As others have said, it makes it easier to pull the engine. You might as well have the experience. If it was an automatic, I would have suggested pulling the eng/trans as a unit. The manual is so light, it is easy to remove/replace it......Rich

Well I think the lad does have a very nice car and that is why I would be against screwing it up accidently of course, and all that to remove some sound deadening. But accidents are just that, "accidents". Now I know I don't know every thing. But when it comes to a 240D that is nice to look at and fun to drive, I will take mine over his. Mine was a very well cared for 240D with all the options, making it, with the 617 Turbo and the added tail light trim a 300D in all respects except for the manually controlled AC. Cruise control didn't work, so most of that is off the engine also. It spent its total life in Houston Texas. However since none of the AC worked or seemed worth saving I pulled it all out save the evaporator. Mine does not have a cracked dash, mine has the much preferred Mercedes Vinyl trim, my floor mats show more use then his and mine has perfect glass, tho the windshield is a replacement. Mine has 15' wheel and tires. I think mileage on both cars is very close.
Most of my working life has been with sales and service of Chevrolet trucks. However I was a service manager for Oldsmobile for 8 years. Now being a service manager doesn't make you a mechanic, but it gives you a pretty good instinct on who knows what they are talking about. In real life I switched or swapped my first engine in 1957, before most of the know it all's on this web page were born. It was a difficult heavy engine to work with, a 307 CID Hudson Hornet Twin H Power and aluminum flat head. And I did not have the tools or a good place to work. Pretty simple by today's standard, but newly created American Motors decided to do away with that engine. I was living in Milwaukee at that time and saw an ad in the Milwaukee Journal that AMC was selling 3000 Hornet and lesser engines out of the Milwaukee Parts Depo. Price, total, for the big engine with dual carbs, generator, starter, wiring, even those big air cleaners and ready to run $215.00. Well that was the fall of 1957 and I did not know everything then and I still don't! But I know what stupid is!
Yes indeed. Stupid is being a pompous old fart assuming everyone else is incompetent.

I recall you are the same clown who has posted a serious amount of misinformation on the turbo engine 4 speed swap. How about keeping your trap shut if you dont have anything constructive to say to the OP?

Post "Hey go ahead, screw up a very nice car. "

Well ;

Why not ? .

I've been doing this for decades, I too am an old fart who knows nothing but I don't let that dissuade me .

I learn by doing as well in my 50 + years as a Mechanic , what better way to learn than by taking things apart and seeing how they tick ? .

Asking what not to do in advance sounds smart to me too .

I'm another one of those who is hesitant to modify my vehicles because I've seen so many ruined but in the end, the Customer is paying for it so if they want to paint it purple and chrome the engine then lower it so much it handles poorly, that's on them .

Just as an aside OP, however you pull the engine, when you remove the gearbox to mount it on a stand, and if/when you remove the flywheel, before you do anything else, very clearly mark the flywheel position to the crank. An unknown but possibly small number of the 5cyl have imbalance made up on the flywheel, and you might have a weighted one.

Probably a neutral balance, but if you lose the correct position you are pretty screwed, and it fits on 12 different ways. Better safe than sorry.

Boy, talk about being nasty! Wow, this forum can't go far with your type of thinking, calling me an indecent name and accusing me of giving mis-information without a shred of evidence. Come on now, that is no way to talk on a forum! Be a Gentleman. Grow up!

How about something constructive? Or maybe you can tell us more about some job you did 60 years ago that has no relevance while telling everyone not to do anything?

Its the attitude of providing no useful information to new members that ends up damaging a forum, especially combined with the intense arrogance of telling them "you know nothing" thrown in.

Guy comes on, posts some nice pictures, asks a few good chassis familiarization questions, and deals with your responses. And you are still yapping away offended that i called you on it. Like i said, shut your trap and move on.

Well Hey, sure I knew he could do it, you just got to play with it until it is all loose and then just pull it out. Anyone can do it! Now the other half is to make it a better cleaner engine and reinstall it. That is the more difficult part. But he can do it, no doubt. My contention is, "is it worth it"? And I don't think it is. It might be nice, shows good ability, but is it worth the effort? I don't think it is. And that is what I started with and I will end it there. Matter of fact, that is how I got my 83. Mr. Carter, a former member got this car from his grandparents. He thought he could do a good job of pulling and overhauling the 240D engine. He did, he spent a bunch on parts, overhauled it at NAPA, reinstalled it and blew it up. Then he let it sit in his garage for 8 years before selling it to me for $750.00 in I think 2012. He didn't have much experience either.
