Question on replacing steering box

I need to replace this on my '81 300SD and have been reading through several old threads. Seems the hardest part is to get the steering coupler back onto the steering column and get everything lined up with the wheel straight.

It occurred to me though: why not leave the coupler attached to the steering column and simply loosen the allen bolt that holds the box itself to coupler in order to remove the box? Any reason this wouldn't work? Seems like a lot less trouble to go through on reinstalling the box.

Yes, that is the way I do it. The box heavy. For me the hardest part is getting everything lined up to get a bolt in, if you are doing it by yourself. Have a helper hold the weight of the box while you slide the coupler in and get a bolt started.

Thanks Rollguy, that's good news! I really didn't want to have to mess with getting the coupler back on the steering column.

Oh and I'll definitely have a helper, whether he likes it or not

Talking Right Way Vs. Wrong Way

"Oh and I'll definitely have a helper, whether he likes it or not "

That's the proper spirit ! .
