OM617 IP swap questions

Hey everyone,

First post here. My daily driver '79 240D died a few weeks ago - best I can guess is that the timing chain skipped some teeth. My mechanic said it was the first OM616 that has stumped him, and he was a master mechanic at Mercedes since the late 80's. I did not have him check timing, but everything else tested fine. Product of elimination says timing is off.

Instead of dealing with the 2.4, I went on Craigslist and found me a hell of a deal - 1985 OM617, complete with turbo, and 1982 trans for free! Of course, it was free because the guy put way too much boost into it and melted piston #1, but still a good deal in my opinion. When I got there, the guy threw in a bunch of accessories to sweeten he deal.

I ended up with the '85 engine and an '82 injection pump. Everything I read says '84-'85 IPs have some "electronic sensors", but I cannot find what those sensors are. Can I use this injection pump with my block?

I will probably post some kind of build thread with this as well. Can't wait to get my daily back up and running again!

Thanks in advance
Max

Yes, the '84 & 5 have a rack position sensor. It is located on the side of the IP towards the block. It is only used in '84 & 5 for emissions, so it is not needed. You can use either IP on either engine. The advantage with the later IP's is that they have a timing port on the side. It makes it easier to time/ check the timing.
