W115 om617 N/A oil cooler line removal question
 

My W115 300D oil cooler line has sprung a leak. I can not for the life of me figure out how to get my hand and a wrench in there to loosen the hose that connects to the oil filter housing. If the battery tray was removable it would be doable but its welding in there, in so many places. That connection is hard to even see not to mention get to by hand with a wrench. From underneath its even less accessible.

Has anyone ever successfully done this?

If I have to remove the motor to get to this fitting, a turbo om617 is going back in instead!

Remove the fan shroud, bolts holding the cooler to the radiator and pull the cooler up a little bit. Then you can wrench on it.

I am talking about where the lines go from the cooler into the oil filter housing not the oil cooler

Is your Oil Filter Housing at the rear of the Engine or is it in the middle or the front of the Engine?

Actually people have said on some of the Mercedes it is easier to pull out the Hoses if the Oil Cooler is gone.

its in the front/middle. Basically under the injection pump.

The oiler cooler itself isnt in the way at all.

Regarding the battery tray location, if you look in the wheel well you should see one or two nut/bolt holes, there is also a bolt holding the tray near the front (rad area, I thing the neg ground cable is also attached at that point as well) if you undue these the tray lifts right out. I learned this the hard way because my wheel wells had years of undercoating in them and I tried to remove the tray from the top and I thought the tray was welded in.

If the Oil Filter is one of those where the Oil Filter change is done from below and the lower housing is steel if you remover the housing and filter would there be more room?

I am not sure you Oil Cooler Hose Nuts are the same size as the ones on the W123. But, I used a large crowsfoot wrench 1-1/6 of an inch on the hose nuts.

You cause that on a breaker bar or on extensions.

I was able to remove the one of the oil cooler hoses (one that goes to the bottom of the cooler) without taking much off other than I think the vacuum line going from the booster to the pump and some fuel lines that where in the way.

YES it is very tight in there. I have a whole new appreciation for working in the engine bay of my w123 after doing that job on my w115. My hands were extremely cut up by the end of the procedure. I did not remove the battery tray. Good luck !

Does anyone have a source of an online Mercedes Service Manual he could look a so he would know what the Mercedes as to say about removing the Hoses?

I couldn't find any bolts in the wheel well as stated by maclaveu and I also noticed it was welded the radiator support so I just decided to pull the motor. It ran good but has a lot of blow by and I want more power so in putting a turbo om617 in to replace it
