Bad Injector?
i have a 1993 300D...I recently noticed an almost hissing like tapping when the car was at idle...i was told by a mechanic friend that one of the injectors was bad? he said it was losing compression...
my questions are...would this cause a reduction of mileage to the car...i am getting about 320 miles to the tank...that just seems embarrissing for a diesel... also...is this an easy fix? can a DIY guy like me replace the bad injector fairly easily...if not...how much am i looking to spend to the part and labor? thanks in advance... Other than the hissing and tapping, does the car run smoothly?

There are seals beneath the injectors that seal it to the prechamber. It's possible that one was not replaced when a previous mechanic pulled the injector. You can hold you hand over each injector with the engine running, you may feel a puff of air above the faulty one. I'd check for a missing (or backwards) seal before replacing injectors. I seriously doubt the injectors are bad though. It's not that hard for a DIY, they just unscrew (need deep 27mm socket that clears the return line nipples).
And yes, your MPG is very low. You should be getting 28-34mpg, which is 400-600 miles per tank. Good luck, |

speedy300Dturbo...other than the hissing and tapping, it runs great...
gsxr...would the problem you mentioned be the cause of the low MPG? thanks in advance... Mario |

Yes, it could be the cause of low MPG. There are a bunch of other things that can cause low MPG as well, I'd check your air filter & tire pressure if you haven't done so recently, for starters...
