300D engine runs when key is turned off

Recently, when I turn off my key on 1978 300D the engine continues to run. When I push the button on the engine it shuts off. How do I fix this?

Time to purchase a "Mighty Vac" and start doing some trouble shooting - you have a vacuum leak. Try to get a vacuum diagram for the car and use the Mighty Vac to try to find where the leak is. You could just nose around looking at the vacuum lines/components and try to find it but it will go faster with the Mighty Vac. There is a vacuum "switch" on the key assy that may be just a vacuum hose come off or the switch may have gone bad BUT a leak in a vacuum component can cause the same thing.

Jim is correct

As a quick fix, try locking the drivers door when you turn off the car. I should "seal" the downstream vacuum leak and shut the engine off.

Good luck and when you get the the vacuum leak diagnostic, do a search on this site and you'll get a wealth of information.

Firstable, there is a simple way to check if the vacuum capsule (not sure of the exact name of this piece) on the top of the injecdtion pump is OK.
You remove the hose which is connected to the vacuum capsule and when you put a finger at the end the hose (with the engine runing) you should feel a suction. If not, that means you got a leak somewhere. If yes, you have to replace the vacuum capsule.

Good luck !
