W124 motor swap
 

Hello, does anyone know if an om603 out of an 87 w124 would be a direct, fairly simple, plug and play swap into a 90-93 w124 with a om602.

In theory it should be but I just want to make sure.

The trans cross member and shift rod, as well as the drive shaft are different. If you can get those items from the donor car, that would make the job easier. There may be other things, but those three come to mind.

The 603 will bolt to the 722.4 transmission but I believe the torque developed by the 603 will tax the 722.4. Exhaust will be a slightly latger diameter and different placement. The 603 is equipped with a slightly larger radiator and air intake. If you go with the 722.3 transmission from the 87 then you will need what Rollguy mentioned above and also the larger yoke for the differential. With the 722.3 you will also need the speedo cable and netural safety wiring harness.

Ok thanks for the info. I am assuming it should fit in without any clearance issues as the 87 came with the om603.

So if I had an 87 for parts/motor/transmission, it would be just transfer everything over basically?

Some who actually have the 87 might argue that most of the engine bay is one giant "clearance issue" ;)

all jesting aside, I can't imagine taking a 20% power cut in my 1987 by having an OM602 with only 5 cylinders...

Imagine taking a 50% power cut with an OM601 NA powered w124.

I found a very clean 92 300d with a lot of oil in the coolant so I am assuming the worst, the heads cracked. Om602 heads aren't that readily available so I figured replace the motor with an om603 or maybe even a 606 with a mechanical injection pump.
