Turbo Fun
FWIW ;
When you overhaul the turbo, take the time to check the boost pressure and clean out the valve in the line to the ALDA as well as lapping the wastegate valve or at the very least take it apart and clean the valve's stem as I've found several that had gummed up and sticky wastegate poppet valves . It's not difficult and doing this makes the boost come in a little bit earlier, improving off idle performance and fuel economy whilst reducing exhaust smoke all at the same time . I was shooting for 15 # but stopped when it reached 13.4#, It's not terribly difficult to adjust the boost pressure , I even figured out how to get that darned spiral spring back in a jiffy . Since the ALDA adjusting screw had already been touched, I fooled with it in 1/8 ~ 1/4 turn increments and discovered that _enriching_ the mixture reduced the exhaust smoke to nil whilst increasing the power and fuel economy . Pay close attention and sweat the petty things, you'll be richly rewarded .

Thank you! Appreciate the input. I'll try and get the turbo torn down this weekend - only have about a bazillion other things going on, but we'll see.
