How did you manage to lose your fob? Call the dealer but be sitting down when you ask availability and cost.

No idea, it had limited life anyways, it was busted held together by tape and flexed when starting the car.

So you're saying being there in person will help with cost? Hopefully.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Looks like plans have changed, instead of chasing the electrical issue, i'll have to focus on preventive maintenance wear items so the car is driveable after being towed to the dealership.

I plan on changing all fluids and filters, all coolant hoses, water pump/T stat, brake hoses, front end tensioning assembly, belt, delivery valve seals, and lastly a hard diesel purge. Anything else I can change that might get me stranded if it breaks?

Also I have a big question, what are ALL of the fuel related O-rings that I can change out? I've searched but never came across a comprehensive complete list.
I'm aiming for a fuel leak free car.
Don’t replace anything that isn’t broken... the car is going to cost you a million dollars! Changing the oil and filter and trans fluid and filter is fine, but everything else is likely okay. If the belt isn’t cracked, don’t replace it. Diesel purge is fine and fuel filter, but I wouldn’t be worried about the fuel lines unless you see air or visible fuel leaks. That intake manifold is a PITA to get back on on the turboed version you’re lucky you don’t have the intercooler piping to the EGR valve.

The water pump is fine if no visible leaks and doesn’t make any noises. I don’t ever replace a thermostat unless the car doesn’t warm up to the operating temperature or it overheats. Had one overheat on me 300 miles away. Took the sucker out and drove it home with no heat but it was a cold ride.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

x2. If you’re on a budget, fix things as they break. If you have the money to spend, start with a car in better shape.

You can put fob innards in another case for considerably less than a new fob. And you need a spare anyway.

You can order a flat key from the dealer for about $40. You will need your registration card, but the car does not need to be towed to the dealer. Not sure where you are in Newport News, but Auto Haus on route 17 can do anything a dealer can do for generally less money.

Thanks everyone

Nelbur, the key fob is NLA, I talked to the guy at ********, he claimed MB updated them on it, supposedly they're introducing new key fobs that will replace the old ones (w140/early w210). He told me to call back in 2 to 3 weeks.

I honestly don't believe it, I'm extremely skeptical new keys are coming. If it comes down to it I'll gut this car to bare metal before sending it to the yard for paperweight.

I couldn't see who you checked with, but call Auto Haus (on 17)service dept. and ask about ordering a flat key. Don't call it a fob. The '97 was the last year with an actual key. The '97 has a chip in the key. I think locksmiths may be able to handle your key, but I am not sure.

Found my key, THANK GOD! Also gauge cluster works, wipers still don't work.
Did an oil change and took it on the highway, it's slow, but it's a smooth cruiser, the NA OM606 is very noisy. But it's a pleasant noise, btw my radio doesn't work so it's all I hear.

Main problem is vibration in reverse, low speed, deceration , and sometimes idle, pretty sure it's a mount issue.
