W124 diesel timing chain cover question.

Car is 1987 300TD Wagon with 603.960 engine I think. I have to pull out cover from timing chain and have question on what it takes to do it? From what I see is not easy job- doe's cylinder head needs to be removed, what about oil pan? Any clues are highly appreciated.

Why do you have to remove the timing chain cover?

The front cover can be removed and replaced without removing the head or oil pan. I hope you’re a seasaoned wrench because it’s a delicate process to not damage the head gasket and oil pan gasket.

x2. Why do you want to do this?

Can the timing chain guides be changed without removing the timing cover?

No and the one that is going to have the most wear is the oil pump chain tensioner.

I doubt that the result could ever be satisfactory without lifting the head and dropping the pan. You can try it, but be prepared to go deep if you mess up a gasket.

Well, I am embarrassed to say but M8 bolt is some place there and I need to find it. It is not in oil pan, I did check. I got my self small borescope camera, can't see it. I have two or three more things to try and if this won't work cover have to go out.
